On May 23, 2023, Yvonne Marie Georgianna Fortier, 84, died peacefully at Actionmarguerite Saint Vital (Foyer Valade).
Yvonne was born in Saint Boniface on January 15, 1939. She was the fourth and last child of Georgianna Hébert (nee Godon) and Aloysius Hébert. Yvonne and her siblings, Denis, Thérèse, Edouard (Eddie), grew up in the shadow of World War II, in Saint-Boniface, on the banks of the Red River, just north of Provencher Blvd beside what was once the Tourist Hotel.
She met her future husband, Clément Fortier, in 1957 and they married in 1958. They had five children between 1959 and 1970.
Yvonne was predeceased by her mother Georgianna Hébert (Godon) in 2001 and her father Aloysius Hébert in 1950 as well as her brothers Denis and Edouard Hébert.
Yvonne leaves to mourn her husband of almost 65 years, Clément Fortier, as well her children, Joanne Riel, Denis (Annette) Fortier, Suzanne (Arthur) Leclerc, Charles (Rhonda) Fortier and Raymond Fortier. As well 11 grandchildren: Danna (Scott), Mélanie (Collin), Stefan (Becca), Stéphanie (Guy), Brianne (Aaron), Janique (Bryan), Serge (Dominique), Nicole (Mitchell), Sarah (Charlie), Joshua (Ainsley) and Matthew (Danijela) as well as 16 great-grandchildren: Zara (Daniel), Adam, Benjamin, Jonah, Everett, Owen, Alexander, Livia, Arlo, Aoife, Rielle, Talia, Avi, Mali, Kai, Malek and two great-great-grandchildren: Brigham and Sidney.
Yvonne also leaves to mourn her sister, Thérèse Bouvier, and three sisters-in-law, Cécile Fortier, Ros O’Brien and Joyce Hébert as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its deepest thank you to all the staff on First Floor of Actionmarguerite Saint Vital (Foyer Valade). Despite the devastating effects of the pandemic on our ability to connect, the staff were angels of compassion who cared for mom with love and tenderness and humour and humanity. She felt loved. Thank you.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating Yvonne’s life will be officiated by Father Charles Fillion at the Saint-Norbert Roman Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2023, with tributes beginning at 10:00 a.m.
A private interment will take place at the Saint-Norbert Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers you are asked to donate generously to the charity of your choice.

Yvonne est née à Saint-Boniface le 15 janvier 1939. Elle était le 4e et dernier enfant de Georgianna Hébert (née Godon) et Aloysius Hébert. Yvonne et ses frères et sœurs, Denis, Thérèse et Édouard, ont grandi dans l’ombre de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, à Saint-Boniface, sur les rives de la rivière Rouge, juste au nord du boulevard Provencher, à côté de ce qui était autrefois l’hôtel la Touriste.
Elle rencontre son futur mari, Clément Fortier, en 1957 et ils se marient en 1958. Ils ont eu 5 enfants entre 1959 et 1970.
Yvonne fut précédée dans la tombe par sa mère Georgianna Hébert (née Godon) et son père Aloysius Hébert ainsi que ses frères Denis et Édouard Hébert.
Yvonne laisse dans le deuil son époux de près de 65 ans, Clément Fortier, ainsi que ses enfants, Joanne Riel, Denis (Annette) Fortier, Suzanne (Arthur) Leclerc, Charles (Rhonda) Fortier et Raymond Fortier. Ainsi que 11 petits-enfants: Danna (Scott), Mélanie (Collin), Stefan (Becca), Stéphanie (Guy), Brianne (Aaron), Janique (Bryan), Serge (Dominique), Nicole (Mitchell), Sarah (Charlie), Joshua (Ainsley) et Mathew (Danijela) et 16 arrière-petits-enfants Zara (Daniel), Adam, Benjamin, Jonah, Everett, Owen, Alexander, Livia, Arlo, Aoife, Rielle, Talia, Avi, Mali, Kai, Malek et deux arrière-arrière-petits-enfants: Brigham et Sidney.
Yvonne laisse également dans le deuil sa sœur, Thérèse Bouvier, et ses trois belles-sœurs, Cécile Fortier, Ros O’Brien et Joyce Hébert ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces.
La famille tient à exprimer ses plus sincères remerciements à tout le personnel du premier étage d’Actionmarguerite Saint Vital (Foyer Valade). Malgré les effets dévastateurs de la pandémie sur notre capacité à nous connecter, le personnel était des anges de compassion qui s’occupaient de maman avec amour et tendresse et humour et humanité. Elle se sentait aimée. Merci.
Les funérailles et la célébration de la vie d’Yvonne seront célébrées par le l’abbé Charles Fillion à l’église de Saint-Norbert le vendredi 2 juin, 2023 à 10h30.
L’inhumation aura lieu au cimetière Saint-Norbert.
