Obituary for William Allan Dryburgh

WILLIAM ALLAN DRYBURGH


William Allan Dryburgh died in Winnipeg on January 10, 2015 at the age of 85 years.


A lifelong resident of the city, he was predeceased by his parents, his brother Alec, his wife Arlene (2004) and his nephew Bruce (2005). Allan is survived by his sons Kenton (Saanichton, BC), James (Lantzville, BC); daughters Carolyn Knight (Victoria, BC) and Andrea Tench (Crossfield, AB); six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as his nephew Keith (Winnipeg).


From the years 1953 to 1969, Allan was a football referee, firstly with the high school league and the WIFU. From 1963 onward, Allan worked for the CFL, primarily as a downfield umpire. He worked in three Grey Cups: 1963, 1964, and in 1966 as Head Referee. In 1983 the Manitoba Football Officials Association made Allan an Honorary Member. With football behind him, Allan started in the Security Guard business, which he ran and expanded for many years. He will be greatly remembered by all his friends, whom he hosted at a soiree every Friday afternoon at the Viscount Gort.


A funeral service celebrating Allan’s life will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 1:00 pm in the Coutu Funeral Chapel 680 Archibald St., Winnipeg, Manitoba.
