Obituary for Walter Albert Ramm

WALTER ALBERT RAMM
May 22, 1927 – June 21, 2021

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father Walter Ramm, on June 21, 2021.

Dad was born on May 22, 1927 to Henri & Pauline Ramm. Dad was one of their six children. Dad married Doreen Rowntree on June 1, 1946 and were together for 74 years until her passing on August 30, 2020. They grew up across the street from each other in Elmwood, and raised six children in their tiny Elmwood house on Martin Avenue.

Dad will be deeply missed by his children Linda (Dennis) Ducharme; Sid (Mea) Ramm; Gilbert (Florence) Ramm; Paul (Raymonde) Ramm; Nancy (Brad) Lamothe, (Dave) Peters; and Albert (Dianne) Ramm, as well as 13 grandchildren, 12 great -grandchildren, two great - great - grandchildren and lots of extended relations.

Dad worked for CP Rail starting as a general labourer and worked his way through various positions, and 43 years later retired as a train engineer. Dad had some peculiar attributes and one of them was his creative ways to fix things, even though they didn’t need it, and sometimes extra parts were leftover. When the trains weren’t running properly, they would say let Walter take it out and he’ll figure it out. When he came back in, the mechanics would gather and chuckle to themselves, and head over to see how Wally had bandaged it up and what the problem was. They would find it rigged with shoelaces, elastic bands and of course tape. He was the Duct tape guru master but would always have an assortment of various types handy. Early in his career he was on the road a lot but still had time to coach and drive us to our various activities. Over his career, he was a dedicated employee and rarely missed work. Many times he would drag himself in just to ensure he received a full pay cheque so he could put food on the table for our family. He would do anything for his family and his strong work ethic rubbed off on us all, and set a great example of providing a stable, safe and protected environment for his family.

Dad loved his family and all his grandchildren and would do almost anything he could for them. He was known to try and hog the babies when they came in the door for visits and the ladies would have to pry the children away from him.

His love of children showed how gentle a man he was and he really loved music and nature.
He loved sitting peacefully in the gazebo avoiding the mosquitos at West Hawk Lake and listening to the wildlife/music. Dad always said he couldn’t bring himself to hurt an animal, but put a cooked meal in front of him and he sure would enjoy eating it.

In their early years together, Dad and Mom would take long walks all around Winnipeg and drives to various Manitoba locations. However, Dad’s favorite spot was West Hawk Lake. 60 years he strolled about and cleaned the park along the way so it would stay pristine and beautiful. Many ice creams were eaten while sitting on the benches and lots of hand holding staring out over the lake were enjoyed over the years.

He chose his holidays either early spring or late summer when less people were about so he could relax.

He was gentle and generous but he wasn’t a pushover either. He was easy to read, honest and direct in his conversation. He provided his honest opinion and you always knew where he stood on the matter at hand.

Dad had some lifelong friends that he enjoyed visiting and spending time with, in the city and of course at the lake.

We thank all the staff at The Waverley and Middlechurch Personal Care Home. Everyone was extremely kind to our father and we thank all of you for keeping him safe and taking great care of him and all the other residents during these very challenging times.

We were blessed to have the best dad of all for 94 great years. He kept things simple. One wife, one home, one job and one fantastic life. We know he’s at peace and in good hands now. He’s back united with Mom as it should be, and Mom will no doubt drag him chatting his ear off to see Sid, Paul and Kathryn and the rest of his family and friends.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes, there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Dad’s memory may be made to the charity or organization of your choice.
