Obituary for Victor Walter Bellay

.

It is with great sadness that the family of Victor Bellay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, wishes to announce his sudden passing at St. Boniface Hospital on March 23, 2024, at the age of 94.

He leaves to mourn his wife Anita (nee Boulet); his children Cathy (Rick) Hill of St. Albert, Alberta, Victor (Laurie) Bellay of Winnipeg, and Susan Bellay of Winnipeg; grandchildren Lewis (Ayla), Amy (Brandon), Richard (Jodie), Dan (Angelina), Nick, and Candace; and great-grandchildren Philip, Holly, Aleenah, Jackson, and Theo. He is also survived by his sister Lucy (Lorne) Patson of Winnipeg; nieces Donna Wright and Sherry (Charlie) Morrison; great-nieces Jennifer (Miguel) and their daughter Mila, and Brittany (Randy) and their son Gavin; and great-nephew Kevin. In addition, he was uncle to Marc Denommée of Oshawa, Angèle Denommée of Timmins, Andréa (Rod) Villeneuve of Timmins, and Bernadette Denommée of Toronto. He was predeceased by his father William, his mother Annie (Karlanchuk), and brothers Nick and Stanley (Mildred).

Victor was born in Teulon, Manitoba, the son of William and Annie Bellay, both of whom emigrated to Canada from Ukraine. He attended high school in Teulon. He began his career with the Hudson’s Bay Company, where he worked for forty years in various communities in northern Ontario and briefly in northern Manitoba as a store manager with the Northern Stores Division, after which he worked for the Raw Fur Division of the North West Company in the city of Winnipeg. While with the Hudson’s Bay Company, he attended fur school, and a large part of his responsibilities involved buying fur. Upon his retirement, he began a second lengthy career with International Fur Dressers and Dyers Ltd. in Winnipeg, where he worked until his passing.

All who knew Victor agreed he was extraordinary. He was devoted to wife Anita, whom he met in northern Ontario and to whom he was married for 69 years. He was a dedicated father to his three children, never failing to go the extra mile (or, in northern Ontario, miles) for them, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Throughout his life, he enjoyed curling, hockey, baseball, and golf, both as a participant and as a spectator. His absence is keenly felt, and he will be deeply missed.

A funeral mass celebrating Victor’s life will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.at the St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 820 Cottonwood Road. Interment in the Archibald Cemetery will follow. We would like to extend our gratitude to cardiologist Dr. D. Allen and the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their assistance and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
