Obituary for Val Ann Katherine Friesen

Val Friesen

(nee Cloutier)

Valerie Ann Katherine (Burns) Friesen passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2013 with her daughter Brandy by her side.

Val was born and raised in the Fort Garry area of Winnipeg. She attended St. Mary?s Academy and Vincent Massey Collegiate where she made friendships that would last her lifetime. She was a talented artist and later attended the Fine Arts program at the University of Manitoba. She had a variety of career adventures including PR work for local radio stations, a flight attendant with Transair and 15 years as a Mary Kay consultant.

After living a short time in Thunder Bay, Val moved back to Winnipeg and met the love of her life. She married Bob in 1973 and on July 27th, 2013 they celebrated their 40th Anniversary surrounded by family and friends. It was a weekend that will remain forever in our hearts. She volunteered with many organizations throughout the years including the John Henderson Band Parents Association, the Winnipeg Police Community Volunteer Program and was still caring for her Palliative Care clients a week before she passed. Val loved people and welcomed them from all over the world to the “Almost Home” Bed and Breakfast that she and Bob ran in their home until her battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis would no longer allow.

Val?s family and friends meant the world to her and her to them. What we all wouldn?t give to have one more visit or phone call with her. She had a profound effect on many lives and taught us about compassion and dignity not just with words but more importantly, with her actions. She was filled with love and light and had a generous and forgiving soul. She had a deep and consistent faith throughout her life. She knew she was going to a better place and we can rest at ease knowing that we all have a special angel looking out for us tonight.

Val is survived by her siblings John, Jim and Cherie and has reunited with her dear parents, Art and Kitty Cloutier, Joan Barkwell, her brother Danny and her beloved dogs Andy, Caesar and Muffin. She will be deeply missed by her children Brandy Elliott (Orlando) and Bobby (Jess). GrandV took great delight in her grandchildren Lily, Elle and Maya and her grand puppies Katie, Ruby and Nevy.

The family would like to acknowledge the support of her doctors and Palliative Care team who helped to ease her struggle during her final weeks at home. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, August 23rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in Val?s memory can be made to the Manitoba Lung Association. ?Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.?
