Obituary for Sean McElmoyle

SEAN MCELMOYLE

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Sean (Mac) McElmoyle on July 14, 2013 at the age of 39. Throughout his brief life he was a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Sheila (Hamm) and his two boys David and Jackson; his parents David and Paulette, his sisters Heather Christensen (Olly (Erik, Soren, Lanaya, Raina)), Kathy Brochu (Lyle (Morgan-Lee, Alexis)), in-laws Tex and Sally Hamm, sisters-in-law Bonnie Bruce (Gene) and Cyndi Hamm, his Aunt Laurie and Uncle Allan, cousins Mike (Rob) and Jim, many friends and, of course, his ?Brothers?. He will be especially missed by his beloved Amma, Margaret.

Sean was born in Winnipeg. He grew up in St James and graduated in 1992 from Sturgeon Creek Collegiate with a dual diploma (academic and vocational). He was known for his unique sense of humor and his amazing ability to engage in a debate on any topic.

Sean started playing hockey when he was 8 years old. He loved the game and was a loyal Philadelphia Flyers fan even when his friends (be they Blackhawks or Bruins fans) would taunt him when they were having a bad season, which was almost always.

He also enjoyed the game of football. Although he never played, he was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears even though they hadn?t won a Super Bowl since 1985. But that?s who Sean was. He was loyal?and once he had your back, he always had your back, good times or bad?no matter what.

Sean loved fishing. He grew up fishing with his Dad and was always in search of the biggest channel catfish he could find. He took his boys out every chance he got; but more often than not, ended up getting ticked off because they would always catch more fish than he did. Although he wasn?t the best golfer, he loved the game and had taken his boys from time to time. One of his most memorable games was in Cuba against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea while smoking cigars with his brother-in-law Gene.

Thanks to his sister Kathy, Sean discovered his love for travelling south. Had she not decided to get married in Jamaica, he might not have realized how much he loved it. He and Sheila and the boys travelled to many places, sometimes it was Jamaica or Cuba for some fun in the sun, or Cedar Point or Valley Fair in search for the biggest roller coaster or, just recently, Las Vegas for a four-day non-stop adventure.

He started working at the HSC Laundry in 1990 at the age of 16 where he met the love of his life, Sheila. He was later employed by Arnes Welding until he was accepted into the Boilermakers Local Union 555 in 1995. Over the last 18 years he worked his way up from Apprentice to General Foreman. He loved being a Boilermaker and was extremely proud to be part of the Brotherhood. Anybody who knew Sean, might say he wasn`t the easiest person to work with but, regardless, they all had the utmost respect for him and what he stood for. He traveled all the way from British Columbia to New Brunswick doing what he loved most. He loved the guys he worked with and always came home with stories to share.

Although Sean worked out of town most of the time, when he was home, one of his favourite things to do was to have people over and sit around the kitchen table, play cards, have drinks and update us on the latest gossip from the jobsite. And there was always a story to tell.

Although they were only friends for the first four years of their relationship, Sean was ever so patient (hard to believe right?!?) and after four years and a six-hour-long phone call he finally got up the nerve to ask her out. From that moment on, they both knew that they had found their soul mate. They were engaged two years later and married on September 27, 1997. They were blessed with the birth of their first son David on September 20, 1998 and once again on May 20, 2001 when Jackson arrived. Their family was now complete. The three of them meant the world to him and there was nothing he loved more than spending time with them every chance he got. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who can never be replaced and will be forever in their hearts.

Sheila would like to thank her wonderful family, amazing friends and especially her sister Bonnie for their amazing love, strength and support. And a special thank you to Cal Morris for being there in a way no one else could.

The family would also like to thank E. J. Coutu & Co for their tremendous help during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Sean may be made to the David and Jackson McElmoyle Trust Fund care of CIBC.

In keeping with Sean?s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre, Jean-Paul-Aubry Hall, 340 Provencher Boulevard.
