Obituary for Rosemarie Irene Johnston (Martel)

ROSEMARIE IRENE JOHNSTON
(nee MARTEL)
July 9, 1941 - April 11, 2021

With great sadness, I announce the passing of my mother, Rosemarie (Rose) on April 11, 2021, age 79. We were fortunate I could be with her at St. Boniface Hospital that evening. In addition to myself, Mom leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and long-time friends who will cherish her memory.

Rose was the baby of the large Martel family, “lucky number 13” as she liked to say. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Abraham and Philomene Martel; brothers, Stanley, Stephen, Nelson, Allan, Walter (Wally), Raymond; and sisters Doris Rivers, Freda Wilson, Laurine (Lori) Riel, Elsie Bessette.

Rose was born in Winnipeg, growing up and finishing high school in Fort Garry. Her career began as a secretary at Great West Life where she made some lifelong friends. While with Citadel, her circle of friends grew. She also moved with her daughter, Amber, to Toronto for career opportunities but moved back to Winnipeg after four years to be close to family again. The last 15 years of her career she worked very happily at Nelson Financial. Rose was a humble woman, and an unintentional pioneer for career women. Mom was strong, hard-working, capable and independent instilling these values in me by example every day.

Rose was more than work, she was dedicated to her family. She was also an avid bowler for many years, she loved dancing and music and was often found singing to her favourite records as she did chores or while preparing a meal anticipating the arrival of her guests. She enjoyed time with family and friends, having a meal, a daily outing, sharing stories and a good laugh.

A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Meadowood Manor where she lived the last two years of her life for their dedication, kindness, inspired, compassionate and loving care. Also, a special thank you to the staff at St. Boniface Emergency Room for their kindness to us both.

Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends and family so desire a donation in Rose's memory may be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Inc., CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., or The Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba Inc.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street.
