Obituary for Rocco Albanese

ROCCO ALBANESE

August 14, 1935 – January 16, 2015

Peacefully, after a long and courageous battle with dementia, our father passed away at the age of 79 years at the Victoria General Hospital. He leaves to mourn his beloved children, Pasquale (Jacqueline), Francesco (Pamela), Salvatore (Linda); grandchildren, Rocco Carmelo, Christopher, Jonathon, Rocco Eugenio and Santina; brothers, Michele Albanese (Grazia) Antonio Albanese; sisters, Giuseppina Albanese, Giovanna De Gola (Aldo), Maria Albanese; brothers-in-law, Antonio Spezzano (Grazia), Serafino Spezzano (Johanna); sisters-in-law, Antonietta Bueti, Angelina Cotroneo (Giorgio), numerous nieces and nephews and countless family and friends in Canada and Italy. He was predeceased by his parents, Pasquale and Rosa, his wife, Santina to whom he was greatly devoted, brother-in-law, Diego Bueti and sister-in-law, Francesca Albanese.

Our father was born August 14,1935 in Molochio, Reggio Calabria, Italy, the youngest of six children. As a young man dad apprenticed as a bricklayer in Calabria later working in Bordighera Northern Italy for two years and Germany for two years. He emigrated to Canada in 1963 to join his older brother Michele. In 1964 our father married the love of his life Santina and together they raised three sons that were their pride and joy. He was a proud, generous and hardworking family man. His greatest love in life was his family, which included not only his wife and children but also his parents, brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters, sisters–in-law and their families. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Like many Italians our father loved to garden, make wine, sausage and other traditional Italian meats and cheeses. Not only was he passionate about making and preserving these Italian delicacies, he was equally passionate about sharing them with family and friends. Nothing gave him greater pleasure.

A devout Catholic of great personal integrity, our father was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Church for over 50 years and attended Sunday Mass weekly. Our father was a very good friend and source of support to many throughout his life. He was respected by everyone around him. Despite his health issues, he never complained and always had a smile and kind words for everyone.

We would like to thank the staff of the Rosewood who cared for our father during the last two years of his life. We would also like to thank the many family members and friends who visited and provided comfort and support to our father and our family. A special thanks to Dr. Joe Bueti for all of his care and support for our father and for ensuring that dad was comfortable in his final days. Many thanks to Father Sam Argenziano for his visit and blessing.

The pallbearers will be Vince Bueti, Frank Bueti, Joe Bueti, Vince Spezzano, Frank Spezzano, Frank Cotroneo, Aldo Albanese, and Rocco Carmelo Albanese. Honorary pallbearer Frank Spezzano. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street.

Papa we love and appreciate everything you have done for all of us. You will be dearly missed by everyone. We know you missed mamma tremendously and you are now together in a much better place. Riposa in pace.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada.
