Obituary for Robert (Bob) Joseph Davies

Bob passed peacefully at HSC after complications from a stroke. He was predeceased by parents Chauncey and Wanda Davies; in-laws Anthony & Irene Spilchak; and sister Helen Olson (Roland). Bob was blessed by a small but loving family that will miss him greatly. This includes his wife Vivian; son Reid (Fran); granddaughters Irene, Victoria (Drew), and Manny. His niece Patty and her daughters Marlee (Matt) and Heather (Cole) have many fond memories of him.

He moved to Winnipeg in 1940 and grew up on Cathedral Ave. in the North End. He and the family made frequent trips back to Selkirk to see relatives and to tend to the garden on the family farm. He remained devoted to Selkirk his whole life and loved taking drives there as often as possible. Bob attended St. John’s High School and upon graduating went to work for the Winnipeg Saturday Post. Thus began his career in the printing business which he stayed in for close to 50 years.

Bob met Vivian Spilchak at a social in the St. Nicholas church basement in ‘57. They married in ‘59 and stayed devoted to each other until his passing. Bob and Viv traveled often and maintained friendships with folks throughout Canada and the USA.

In ‘67 they had their son Reid. Bob was determined to provide Reid with the opportunities that he did not have as a youth, and subsequently was very involved in all of his sporting endeavours as a coach, manager, or as a devoted fan. That same year Bob and Viv purchased a small cottage and parcel of land at Malachi, ON. For 40 years Bob spent time fishing, building, fixing, and socializing. Many lifelong relationships came out of Malachi. They remained there for 40 years. Following that Bob and Viv traveled south to Weslaco, TX where they also made many lasting friendships.

In ‘92 Bob became Grampy to Irene, then Victoria in ‘94’ and Manny in ’04. Grampy was keen to look after the kids and drive them to and from activities and events, and they enjoyed spending time with him and Grammy at their home in Windsor Park and their cottage at Malachi.

Bob had many hobbies. He loved to walk with his best friend Sam the Beagle. He was an avid reader and WWII historian. He built the family own cottage at Malachi, and continued to renovate and fix things until recently. He was a great cribbage and hearts player and would rarely lose a game. He loved to hunt and fish. His love of fishing started in the slough in Selkirk at 6 years old with his cousin David while they stayed with their Granny during the summers. His fishing exploits took him to BC, Alaska, Florida, Gods Lake and all throughout Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. His favorite fishing destination was the family cottage at Malachi, ON. Every evening Bob could be seen trolling in reverse until it got too dark to see. He was a fishing legend at Malachi.

Heartfelt thanks go out to Kelly & Bonnie Johnson; Dianne & George Watson; Ron Mayer; Lorne & Bonnie Mazur; and Bob & Judy Lester for their friendship over the past 40+ years. Thanks to Dr. P. Mehta for his excellent care over the past 15 years. Bob loved you all.

Cremation has taken place. The family invites you to join them to celebrate Bob’s great life on Friday November 25th at 1:00 p.m. at E.J. Coutu & Co at 680 Archibald. Lunch will be served after some words from his family.
