Obituary for Rita Clara Desharnais (Vouriot)

Rita Desharnais (née Vouriot)
June 6, 1927 – January 26, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Rita passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side at Charleswood Long Term Care Home. She is survived by her two children Pauline (Greg) and son. She will be missed by her sister-in-law Cécile and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Rita was predeceased by her husband André in 1972, and parents Joseph and Anna Vouriot. Mom was the last of 12 siblings remaining (Cécile, Eva, Oscan, Dorothée, Eugène, Thérèse, Armande, Flore, Louis, Marcel, and Henri).

Rita was born in La Salle, Manitoba. She met André and they were married on June 2, 1956, living in Carey, Manitoba. Mom worked in St. Malo at a sewing factory. When dad got sick the family moved to Ste Anne in 1971 and when he passed away, moved to Winnipeg in 1973. Shortly after, mom started working at the St. Boniface Hospital Nursing School. She made many friends and acquaintances there. Mom enjoyed working evenings. On several occasions after her shift on a Friday morning she would pick up her best friend, Mrs. Cruthers, and drive all the way to Brandon for a weekend of shopping, dancing, and carousing! Rita also loved knitting her famous slippers, sewing, baking, shopping, and always wanted to play cards.

The family wishes to acknowledge the kindness and compassionate care that Rita received from Charleswood Long Term Care Home from the nurses (Kris and Veerpal) and the health care aides (Wendy, Deborah, and Tigest) in Unit 3. A special thank you is also extended to Ron who participated giving Rita the Sacrament of the Sick and Absolution.

Mom you will be missed and will remain in our hearts forever.

Cremation has taken place and with Covid restrictions, a private family service will take place.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.
