Obituary for Pierina La Rosa

PIERINA LA ROSA

(nee Zinghini)

Peacefully, on Monday, December 17, 2012 Pierina La Rosa, our beloved mother, sister and grandmother passed away at the age of 98 years.

Mom was born on November 17, 1914 in Gerace, Reggio Calabria Italy. In 1951, she came to join her husband, Luigi in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mom was employed as a garment worker at Gaspard & Sterling Cloak for 25 years, specializing in needlework. After the passing of our dad in 1986, mom chose to stay in the family home, where she led a very independent life until the age of 95. She lived simply and happily, with good food and music as her passions. She loved cooking for friends and family and hosting ?jam nights? in her dining room where her son, Carmine and his musician friends would come over and play.

Her memory will be cherished by her children: Giuseppina, Connie (Mario) Cianflone, Carmine (Lina), Sonia (Sabino) Malizia; her brother, Carmelo (Franca) Zinghini; sister-in-law, Angelina Zinghini; grandchildren: Luisa (Mario), Raffaele, Danny, Gino (Rose), Isabella (Diego), Venturino, Mario (Nancy), Nadia, Sabrina (Richard) and numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Luigi La Rosa; brothers, Domenico and Joe Zinghini; son-in-law Bruno Tomassetti; sister-in-law Domenica Zinghini; and her grandchildren, Gina and Sabatino Malizia.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Rosa Alecci, honorary pallbearer who was a dear friend to mom for many years. A special thank you to Anna Bova, the staff and volunteers of the recreational program at Centro Caboto, where mom loved to socialize. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the second floor staff at Poseidon Personal Care Home for their care and attention during mom?s short stay.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue, with viewing one hour prior to the mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary?s Cemetery, 520 Osborne Street.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one?s choice.
