Obituary for Myles Derek Middleton

Myles Middleton

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Myles Derek Middleton, on Monday November 9, 2020 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Myles was born on October 23rd, 1955 to Stanley and Madeline Middleton. He was predeceased by them but is survived by his loving partner George Shirtliffe, his sister Janet Middleton of Edmonton, and his twin brother Ross of Winnipeg, plus niece Natalie and nephews Dion and Aaron and their families.

Myles was employed at the Hilton Suites Hotel and was dedicated to the hospitality industry and to maintaining the standards it expected. He was greatly respected by his fellow servers, the kitchen and management and by the many regular guests that requested his service. Myles loved his home and took great pride in it. Whether it was in his gardens or how he decorated his home, whether it was apartment or house, it was obvious he had been born with a great gift. If you were invited for dinner you could expect the finest cuisine all prepared with his love and careful planning. There was no dish he was afraid to prepare. One day he looked at George and said, “You know I’ve never made any of these dishes before”. But he knew how different foods complimented others and his meals were huge successes. Display was a another of Myles’ skills. Not only were his meals displayed like an artist had been at work but he knew how to set a table. Part of knowing Myles was in enjoying his wit and wicked sense of humour. He could bring people to hysterics by his off the cuff comments. He was interested in the economy and in politics and could speak his views. Times spent at West Hawk Lake with the Dennis family were cherished occasions and their neighbours were always glad to see him.

The last few years were particularly hard on Myles. It took all his effort to wander through his rooftop gardens and he wasn’t able to help George with the daily gardening tasks. He would spend hours on his lawn chair admiring the beauty before him. His pets, Fritz and Midnight were very dear to him and were great company as times became more trying. Myles loved animals and they took to him readily. Throughout this period friends marveled at how he kept his positive attitude and never gave up hope his life would return to normal. Such was his zest for life.

He did not like the cold and in 2008 he purchased a townhouse condo in Phoenix. It was his dream to bring the 1985 condo into 2020 standards but, Covid 19 prevented travel and declining health took its toll.

Myles touched the hearts of many. Along with George, his family and his many friends and acquaintances will remember him for his kindness and caring ways. There is a link death cannot sever, love and remembrance last forever.

Sweet be thy rest!

In keeping with Myles’ wishes, cremation has taken place and due to restrictions on public gatherings a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a tree may be planted in memory of Myles, or donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
