Obituary for Maurice Chubaty

MAURICE CHUBATY 1938-2020
On Thursday, September 24, 2020, Maurice Chubaty, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother passed away at the age of 82.
Maurice was born on May 26, 1938, in Stuartburn, MB, to Harry and Anne Chubaty (nee Shushelnitsky). His mom being a teacher, the family moved many times, living in a number of different towns across Manitoba. After graduating from Ethelbert Collegiate, he moved to Winnipeg, where he worked at Moors Taxi and then as a radio/TV technician, before beginning a 35 year career with Manitoba Telephone System as a central office technician and then as an equipment installation manager.
In 1958, during his early days in Winnipeg, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Hnetka. They were married and raised their family in Winnipeg and remained there until Maurice retired from MTS and they moved to their dream home in Traverse Bay.
Maurice was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed his many hunting and fishing trips with his sons, grandkids, wife and friends. Maurice also loved to snowmobile, spending endless hours on the trails around Traverse Bay. Their home was the hub for many family gatherings and outdoor adventures. Maurice loved to play cards with friends and family. Everyone fought to be his partner in cribbage.
Maurice and Betty loved to travel. A trip to Churchill was the best. They visited the East Coast and enjoyed the West, exploring Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver. They also travelled across the US, including New York, Denver and Seattle. Their last road trip across the prairies included stops in Edmonton, White Court, Peace River and Drumheller, visiting family all along the way.
Maurice enjoyed being with family and made many trips to Ashern to visit his brother Jarvis and family. He loved being part of the Ashern One Box Hunt and starred as Santa one year for the Santa Clause Parade. He volunteered to do this so as not to be recognized by the local kids. The highlight of that day was visiting the shut-ins around town and seeing the smiles he put on their faces.
Maurice and Jarvis both enjoyed their careers with MTS and it created a special bond between them. They spent many hours before and after retirement, discussing the good times they had and how MTS changed over the years. The brothers enjoyed talking, texting and emailing on a daily basis.
The two families spent most Christmases together, enjoying their Ukrainian traditions, sharing laughs and singing Christmas carols. The pinnacle of each Christmas was hearing Maurice sing “five golden rings” during the 12 Days of Christmas.
Maurice was predeceased by his parents Harry and Anne Chubaty; his brothers-in-law Bill Hnetka, Tony Hnetka and John Chester; his beloved dog, Chloe.
Maurice will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Betty; sons Tom (Debbie) and Les (Carla); grandchildren Stephen, Ricky, Julie, Alyssa, Kyle, Cody (Bella); great-grandson Tristan; brother Jarvis (Mary) and their sons Justin (Tracy) and Jeff (Jodi); brother-in-law Ed Hnetka; sisters-in-law Zelma Chester and Gwenn Hnetka.
Maurice’s positive attitude and zest for life were infectious and enabled him to cope with and survive the many challenges life threw his way, including cancer. While he is no longer with us, his example of strength and courage remain in our hearts and our fond memories will comfort our family in the times ahead.
Cremation has taken place and no formal service will take place.
