Obituary for Mary Stepic (DeVriendt) and Milan (Mike) Stepic

Mary Louise Stepic (DeVriendt)
December 13, 1939 - October 31, 2023

Milan (Mike) Stepic
March 11 1933 - November 18, 2023

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of both our beloved parents this past fall.
They will be dearly missed by their three children - Jim (Hilda), Sonja (Guy) and Duane (Tanya); grandkids - Helena (Jeff), Jessica, Keenan (Celia), Ariana (Chad), William, Matthew, Milan, Luka and Vlad; and their new great grandchild Kylie, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary was the 3rd child of Julia and Leon DeVriendt. She had an older sister Rose Kelly, and an older brother Frank DeVriendt, all of whom have passed before her. Mary loved children and was thrilled to become a school teacher. She graduated from teachers college in 1959 where she enjoyed many years of teaching and subbing throughout the Winnipeg school system.

Mike was the 4th child of Jagica and Josip Stepic. He had six sisters and one brother, all who have passed with the exception of Teta Mila, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins all who live overseas. Dad was a painter/decorator by trade. He was also a pilot in the Yugoslavian army but fled his home to come to Canada in late 1960.

Our Mom and Dad met within the first three months of him being in Canada and it was love at first sight! They were married in 1962 and started their family right away, all while our dad started his Painting and Decorating business and our mom taught grade 3.

In 1977 Mom and Dad bought a lakefront cottage at Gull Lake. It was a place of joy for our parents, and we enjoyed many summers there making memories and lifelong friends. Mom always enjoyed spending time with her wonderful friends and driving us three kids everywhere, while dad worked and made sure we were able to participate in whatever activities we desired.

Life changed for them both in 2018, as mobility issues prompted them to sell their home of 50 years in Windsor Park and move to assisted living at Devonshire Place, where they made many new friends. Our social mom participated in all activities and games offered there and loved every minute of it! Thank you to the staff at Devonshire for the great care, attention, and patience they gave to our parents. I’m sure our Dad would love to send you all a KitKat from heaven.

Why things turned out the way they did we will never know, but we trust that God’s plan was the right plan. A routine surgery for our mom turned into a 41 day nightmare while our dad decided to join in and had emergency surgery 6 days after our mom, ending up in side by side rooms in the hospital, passing away 18 days after his wife. We will miss them both so much but are thankful that their struggle is over.

A special thank you to the staff at the St Boniface Hospital 7th floor for the care and kindness that was shown to our parents and us during those critical weeks. God Bless.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life to honour our parents on Friday January 26th at 11am at Coutu Funeral home, 680 Archibald St. followed by light refreshments and snacks.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in their name to the Winnipeg Humane Society or Cancer Care Manitoba.
