( nee Spellman )


Our beloved “Spelly” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the Riverview Health Centre surrounded by her family.


Mary will be lovingly remembered by husband Ted, stepdaughters, Lisa (Marc) Baltzan, Kristine (Brad) Posthumus and Grandchildren. Sisters and brothers from Ireland, Margaret (Frankie) McGowan, Teresa Spellman, Gerard (Marian) Spellman, Tom (Nancy) Spellman, Josephine (Frankie) Lynch, Carmel (Johnnie) Moran, Bernadette(Michael) Ruane, twenty five nieces and nephews, eight grand nieces and nephews, her Aunt,Sister Imelda, cousins, her brother in-law Walter (Lynn) Mac Martin and sister in-law Pat (Russ) Duthoit.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Josephine Spellman of Galway, Ireland.

Mary was born December 9, 1944 in Galway, Ireland. Mary arrived in Canada with the Legion of Mary on February 28, 1968 and spent two years in The Pas and Thompson arriving in Winnipeg in 1970. She is a founding member of the Irish Association of Manitoba and their theatre company, The Tara Players. She has served as mayor, Queen, president, actress and many positions on the board of directors.

Mary worked at the CIBC as teller and hostess for many years befriending customers, retiring in 2002. In 1996 she was presented with the Achievers President’s Award. In 1987, Mary was presented with City of Winnipeg Community Service Award. In 1994 she was judged the best actor in the Acting Irish International Theatre Festival. Mary has performed in Irish plays across Canada and the United States.

Ted would like to thank Mary’s family from Ireland, his family, Father Eugene, and all our supporting friends for their kindness and help at this time. He would also like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre, CancerCare Manitoba, St. Boniface Hospital and St. Ignatius Parish.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating Mary?s life will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 255 Stafford Street at Corydon Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Manitoba , CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, or the Damien Bessette Scholarship fund.


Spelly was one of those special people in life that you never forget. Her light and her sparkle will continue to shine in our memories forever.

We love you so much.
