Obituary for Mary - Ellen Bodner (Leach)

Mary-Ellen “Mel” Bodner
(nee Leach)
June 22, 1952 – June 25, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary-Ellen (Leach) Bodner at home surrounded by her family, on June 25th, 2023, at the age of 71. Mel was born June 22, 1952 in Port Arthur, Ontario to her late parents Verna (Dodge) and George Leach.

Mel is survived by her loving husband Richard “Ric” Bodner, daughter Marnie Bodner, her children Evan, Colten & Paul Thomas; her son Scott (Anastasia) Bodner, their children Mila and Zoya Bodner; brother Brian (Paula) Leach, nephew Harris Leach of Thunder Bay; Sister Debbie Leach (Clarence Comeau) of Miramichi, New Brunswick; sister-in-law Debra Bodner of Vancouver, British Columbia; step-sister-in-law Janice Olesiak, her children Jessica and Jordan Olesiak; step brother-in-law Kevin Swanson.

She was predeceased by her nephew Chris Leach, parents-in-law Lois Bromley & Pete Bodner; sister-in-law Shelley Hamilton; step-brother-in-law Ed Olesiak.

After receiving her RN designation, Mel & Ric moved to Winnipeg where she practiced nursing at Concordia and St Boniface Hospitals. At her retirement, after 40 years, she was the clinical resource nurse of Labour and Delivery at St Boniface Hospital.

In retirement, she often travelled to the East and West Coasts to visit family as that was very important to her. She belonged to a book club, yoga group and developed a strong passion for paddling with the Chemo Savy dragon boat team. She even competed in meets in Superior Wisconsin and Vancouver.

The family would like to thank the CancerCare Manitoba treatment room nurses at St Boniface hospital for their exceptional care during Mel’s journey.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or an animal charity of your choice.

Those of us who were lucky enough to know Mel, found her to be compassionate, exuberant and a fiercely loyal person. She will be greatly missed by all.
