Obituary for Marietta "Maria" Elias Fronda

MARIETTA “MARIA” ELIAS FRONDA

Marietta “Maria” Elias Fronda (née Viado), 79, passed away peacefully during the night of November 15, 2020, at Charleswood Long Term Care Home, after complications due to PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy), a rare brain disease. She was diagnosed with the disease in 2018, but she never stopped fighting. Her family is grateful for all the memories they were able to share because of her strength and courage.

She was born to the late Beatriz Elias and Alejandro Cabalbag Viado, on December 16, 1940, in Burgos, Pangasinan, in the Philippines. In 1969, she left the Philippines to live in Winnipeg, MB, through a federal program that brought skilled workers to the city from the Philippines to work in the then-booming garment industry. After working as a seamstress, she became a health-care aide at Concordia Hospital. Not long after, Marietta earned her health-care aide certificate from Red River College (formerly Red River Community College) via a joint program that was offered through the hospital and college. Marietta found a sense of great meaning in caring for others through her work at the hospital, so full-time work was not enough to keep her busy. She continued to help others by working as a casual health-care aide at many Winnipeg personal-care homes, including Foyer Valade and Charleswood Long Term Care Home (formerly Holiday Haven Nursing Home).

Marietta married Cezar Fronda in 1973, in Winnipeg, MB, after she sponsored him from the Philippines to Canada. Marietta is survived by two children: Frederick Fronda (Carol-Lee Fronda); and Jeanne Fronda (Norm Gauthier). She is also survived by six grandchildren: Sage, Seth, Emillee, Emilio, Eliot and Joshua. She has six siblings: Sulpicio, Marcelina, Esmena (deceased), Julita, Pete and Osias. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Marietta was a devout Catholic, dedicated mother and perpetual extrovert. Fearless when it came to trying new things, Marietta decided to learn how to swim later in life and enrolled in lessons at Concordia Pool during her retirement. She passed her appreciation for the water to her youngest grandchild, Joshua, who adores playing in the water as much as she did. Marietta was extremely devoted to her family and was steadfast in her love for, and dedication to, them. She would often repeat, “A large family is a strong family.”

A private family viewing and Catholic funeral mass took place on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The burial took place at St. Boniface Cemetery.
