MARIA SCERBO
(nee Anania)
December 28, 1939 – May 28, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Maria Scerbo (nee Anania), at St. Boniface Hospital, with her family by her side, on May 28, 2021, at the age of 81.
Words cannot describe how much we will miss Maria.
She was a loving, devoted, and hard-working wife, mother, sister, and nana. She was a true friend to many and was well loved. Wherever she went she made friends, she was not just a mother or grandmother to her own family but was one to everyone whom she encountered. Her energy was ever present and always lit up any room she was in.
Maria was born and raised in Amato, Italy, and was the eldest daughter of Giovanna and Raffaele Anania. After World War II Maria came to Canada with her mother and two younger sisters, Coni Anania and Carmalina Jones. Both sisters currently reside in Winnipeg, where Maria also ended up settling, and was able to maintain a close relationship with. As the big sister, Maria always loved and worried about her sisters unconditionally. Back in Italy Maria had one aunt, Zia Rosina, who she remained close with despite the ocean between them. Maria was able to visit her aunt in Italy on numerous occasions, and loved the land, the people, and all her fond memories.
While living in Amato as a young girl Maria met Mario Scerbo. The two reconnected in Canada where their courtship continued. Right from the start Mario fell for Maria’s fun strong spirit and beauty. The two married on October 27th, 1956 in Montreal. After moving back to Winnipeg to be closer to Maria’s family, Maria and Mario started their family. They were blessed with their first son Charlie, followed by Ralph, then Tina, and finally Mario Jr. Maria and Mario both worked very hard to create a wonderful life for themselves and their children, and together they always provided for the family and created many memorable experiences. The family went on many road trips, often involving camping, around North America, as well as vacations to the Caribbean.
Maria supported her children fiercely and not only adored them but also their spouses. She had the privilege of welcoming Linda, Mike, Tannis, and Justine to the family. She had a special love for her three granddaughters, Jenna, Sarah, and Rachael, who she thought the world of. She would do anything for the “grandchuggeda”, and when they were over at Nana’s house the menu was wide open. Nothing made Maria happier than having all of her family together for a home cooked meal. You could see the importance family had to Maria as her home was covered in family photos.
Maria loved spending time with family and friends. Her door was always open for visitors, and there was never a lack of food or drinks. Visits with Maria and Mario would last hours and were always filled with good food, laughter, and happiness. The kitchen was a vital room in the house, one where Maria spent a lot of time, and would create a complete meal at any hour of the day. Even in her final weeks she was making homemade bread and sausages with her family in the kitchen. Always loving food and wanting to teach and learn different recipes.
In the last years of her life, Maria and Mario were inseparable. They spent nearly all their waking hours together and had a bond like no other.
We all love you very much and will never forget your warmth, kindness and positive energy.
One day we will all be together again.
Thank you for being with us.
You are now with God!
