Obituary for Maria Do Carmo Pinto

.

Maria (also known as Carmen) was a fiercely loving and generous mother, wife, sister, aunt and friend. She was predeceased by her parents Francisco & Julita Monteiro, and her beloved siblings Carlos, Raul, and Sarita. She is survived by her husband Michael; her son Neal (Christine); daughter Michelle (Jeff); her grandson Markus - as well as her sisters Ceu & Elisa; sisters-in-law Antoinette, Monalisa and Noemy; Diego (Ameeta), Joaquim (Melba) and Flaminio. There are also many godchildren, nieces and nephews who will cherish her passion for life, and the people she loved.

Carmen was born in Loutolim in Goa (now part of India) - the third of nine beautiful children. She graduated from the University of Bombay, working as a teacher in Goa until she married Michael, and they embraced a new adventure together - settling in Canada in the mid-70's. She raised two successful children, and enjoyed a career of her own with the Government of Manitoba until retiring in 2005.

She was an eminent member of Winnipeg's Goan community - especially with her soulful expertise in Goan cuisine, and her love for both Konkani and Portuguese music. One could drive by the family home on a beautiful summer's day and enjoy the vibrant flower gardens that she would plant in the front yard every year. The last few years of her life were especially devoted to her adorable grandson Markus, who already shares a lot of her particular spirit and passion for everyone and everything.

The legacy that Carmen leaves behind, is one of leadership, determination and love. Her health challenges over the last two decades of her life never prevented her from giving at least 150% to those she loved, and those in need. She was the initiator of all celebrations - making sure all friends and family attended, participated, and were overfilled with her amazing food. She set firm expectations for her children's accomplishments, but never let it get in the way of their happiness.

Every day was a gift to her... and every day with her, was a gift to those who knew her.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Gerard Catholic Church, located at 45 Foster Street, in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you plant and nurture something in your own garden to honour Carmen’s love of gardening.
