Obituary for Maria "Rita" Meyer

Maria (Rita) Meyer

(nee Hoogendorp)

Peacefully, on October 24, 2019, at Golden Links Lodge, Maria (Rita) Meyer passed away after suffering many years with dementia, at the age of 78 years.

She leaves to mourn her three children: Angela (Terry), Jeff, Dan; grandchildren: Erica, Jayse, Kyle, Ty, Barak, Caeden, Nolan; great granddaughter Brooke and sister-in-law Hermina; relatives and friends. Rita was predeceased by her husband John Meyer; her son Jack Meyer; her granddaughter Chantelle Meyer; her parents Jack and Coby Hoogendorp and her brother Jacobus (Johnny) Hoogendorp.

Rita was born in The Hague in 1941 and immigrated with her parents to Winnipeg in 1954, where she met her husband of Dutch descent. She faced the challenge during her early teens of learning a new language and getting accustomed to a new culture. After graduating from hairdressing school, she started her own business and began raising a family.

Rita‘s fun loving nature will be remembered by her spontaneous laugh and the playful way she interacted with her grandchildren. Her love for children was evident all through her later years when seeing children would light up her face. Rita enthusiastically loved music and dance. She and her husband John were known to tear up the dance floor. Rita is most remembered by staff at Golden Links Lodge as the dancer.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to staff who cared for her at Golden Links Lodge.

In keeping with Rita’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at E.J Coutu Funeral Chapel. Family would like to remind everyone of the clock change on that day.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rita’s memory to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba
