It is with great sadness that the family of Maria Haczkur “Majka” announce her sudden passing on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the age of 64.
Maria was born in Poland, where she married her husband Mirek and had their first child Maciej. Both Maria and Mirek were active members of the Solidarity movement, where they were interned and imprisoned under martial law. To start a better life, they said their goodbyes to family in Poland and immigrated to Winnipeg with their son.
Maria was a devoted mother. She welcomed her second child Marek, and years later welcomed her third, Magda. She enjoyed cooking delicious home-cooked meals and Polish recipes, planting flowers in her garden in the summertime, and doing Polish crossword puzzles.
Maria will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Mirek; children, Maciej (Krista); Marek, Magda (Christian); her friends in Canada, and her friends and family in Poland. She was predeceased by her parents, Janina and Czeslaw.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and
compassion. They would also like to thank everyone for their love and prayers, and for all the donations raised on Maria’s GoFundMe fundraiser to help provide a proper burial and farewell.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday May 13th at 10 am, at E.J. Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald St., Winnipeg.
A Polish Funeral Mass will follow, Friday May 13th at 2 pm at the St. Andrew Bobola Church, 541 Marion St., Winnipeg.
The family would like to invite all friends and loved ones to attend.
For anyone who cannot attend in person, the service will be available via livestream, please contact maciejhaczkur@gmail.com for instructions.
