MARGARET CHRISTINE YOUNG
On Thursday, June 30, 2022, Margaret Young peacefully passed away surrounded by family.
Margaret was born in Winnipeg to Patrick and Bernice Flood (Herriot). Margaret was married to Robert Young sharing three daughters Karen (Michael) Rehman, Katharine Young and Krista (Jason) Reibin and was the proud grandmother of Joseph, Bethany, Emma and Amy. Predeceased by her parents Patrick and Bernice Flood, in-laws Jim and Marge Young, and sisters Jean Ann Flood and Janet (Howard) Penner, she will be greatly missed by her brothers, Bob (Linda) and Allan (Marie) Flood, brother-in-law Duncan (Debbie) Young, sister-in-law Dale (Rick) Baughman and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Margaret attended St. Mary’s Academy and after graduating in 1966 studied for a year at Teachers College. She went on to get her Pedagogy in Education at the University of Manitoba through night and summer school while starting her career. Margaret’s first position was teaching grade one and two at Windsor Park School where she joined the planning committee for Darwin School. She would go on to teach at Darwin from the year it opened until June 1976 when she made the decision to be a stay at home mom. After raising her three daughters, she went back to work in the Louis Riel School Division as an Instructional Assistant at both Darwin and Samuel Burland Schools. When HS Paul School was being built, she was encouraged to go back to the classroom and taught Kindergarten at HS Paul for 18 years.
In her younger years, Margaret was an avid cyclist which is where she met Bob. She was also a volunteer Brown Owl for the Girl Guides of Canada for over 10 years and was involved in organizing Christmas hampers through the schools.
After retiring she took up quilting and volunteered her time teaching other women how to sew. She was involved with St. Vincent de Paul organizing hampers and weekly food deliveries. In her retirement she spent most of her time with her grandchildren, teaching them how to bake, sew, garden, read, etc. She loved to travel and got the chance to travel with Bob all over Europe when Karen and her family lived there for three years.
Margaret loved to spend summers at the cottage in Grand Beach. Going for long walks, reading, visiting with friends and family, drinking red wine on the deck and sharing the cottage with her family were among her greatest joys.
The next time you open a bottle of red wine, raise a glass to Margaret.
Margaret’s funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 12 at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg, MB. A private interment will follow.
