Obituary for Margaret (Marnie) Ruth Cherrie (Yakel)

Margaret (Marnie) Ruth Cherrie (Yakel)

Marnie passed away peacefully in her home with her family by her side on March 15, 2022, at the age of 72.

Marnie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 8, 1950, to Florence and Alec Yakel. Marnie's early years were filled with close family and friends, lots of laughter, love and many family get togethers. Marnie’s great sense of humor, love for musicals, camping, music, books, and her compassion for people were shaped in those early years.

Marnie chose a career in nursing. She started her career as an LPN and worked for many years at Seven Oaks Hospital. In the early 1990’s Marnie decided to go back to school. With hard work and pure determination, she achieved her goal of graduating with honours and the designation of a Registered Nurse. Marnie worked in many different areas of nursing throughout her career, eventually retiring in 2018.

Marnie absolutely loved being a nurse, her huge heart, generosity, intelligence, experience, and compassion for others made her one of the most wonderful nurses, her impact on the nursing community will never be forgotten.

Marnie loved nothing more than spending time with her family and friends. From small birthday gatherings to big Christmas parties or outings with her friends and coworkers, Marnie was generally the life of the party. Her ability to carry on and tell multiple stories at once, her quick wit, dry but amazing sense of humor and her love of singing and dancing will remain in our hearts forever.

Some of Marnie’s favorite memories were camping trips as a child, and then many years later with her boys, spending many summers at Muriel Lake and Rushing River. The stories she had raising her four boys could go on for hours, and they did.

"It was all worth it once I had my toes in the sand and good book in my hands"

Marnie was a huge Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan. Marnie loved Bomber football, watching the last two Grey Cup Championship games at least 200 times each. You could hear her cheering and yelling at her TV from miles away. In later years she began watching Jets games and soon became quite the passionate hockey fan as well. Chatting and texting to her boys every commercial break. We will miss those moments and cherish them always.

Marnie was an extremely important person and played a very important part in many of our lives. She will be remembered in our hearts forever and will always be missed.

Marnie was predeceased by her parents Alec and Florence Yakel and her son Cameron Bonham.

Marnie is survived by her sons Jordan (Shannon) Bonham, Davin Bonham, Graeme (Sherry Turner) Bonham and her Brothers Kent (Eleanor) Yakel and Don (Lina) Yakel. Grand children Erin, Paige, Grace, Emily, Atticus and Sophia Bonham and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life to honor Marnie will be held at a later date.
