Obituary for Marcella Rootsaert

MARCELLA ROOTSAERT

(nee HAMERLINCK)

With sadness, we announce the passing of Mum at Grace Hospital on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the age of 98.

She was predeceased by her parents Edmond and Louise, husband Bertrand in 1995, and siblings; Cijrillus, Irene, Cijriel
, Alina and Agnes.

Mum leaves to mourn five children, eighteen grandchildren, their spouses, and twenty-six great grandchildren: Adrien (Geraldine), Cathleen, Corinne, Christine, Dean and Wayne; Ed (Jean), Bryan, Peter, Mark and Christopher; Bob (Colleen), Keith, Allison, Kyle and Michelle; Joanne (Barrie Carman), Sean and Kirsten; Lorraine (Michel Bremault), Janine, Joel and Julie. She is also survived by her brother Herman (Julia) in Belgium, and many nieces and nephews.

Marcella was born March 9th, 1917, in Eede, Zeeland, Netherlands. In 1939, with Dad and her first born, a baby carriage, a cradle she had made, along with five dozen diapers Mum came to Canada. She spent most of her married life on a small farm on Rosser Road. Mum learned English by reading the newspaper and over time acquired an avid interest in reading books. Her Catholic faith was central to her life and she and her family attended the Belgian Sacred Heart Church in St. Boniface. Mum sewed her children’s clothes and proudly led her well-dressed children to the front pews. She listened with her children while their Dad sang many solos. Sacrifices were made because Mum was intent on sending her children to private Catholic high school.

Knitting and crocheting was a pastime Marcella carried on throughout her life. She crocheted tablecloths for her granddaughters and afghans for her grandsons. Mum sponsored two children through
World Vision
and was a life-time member of the Catholic Women’s League. She was intrigued with history, monarchs and politics, both domestic and global. Conversations with Marcella on these topics were meaningful; she was well informed and she had strong opinions. She was blessed with a good memory and was aware right to the end. Mum was the hub of the wheel that kept our extended family turning.

Following Dad’s passing, Mum moved into Columbus Courts on Edgeland Blvd. There she found a new lease on life, made many new friends and attended Mass on a daily basis. She spent her last nineteen years in a place she truly loved.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for the excellent care given to Marcella.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Marcella can be made to World Vision.

Prayers will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in Saint John XXIII Parish, 3390 Portage Avenue. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, April 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. also at Saint John XXIII Parish.
