Obituary for Luc Daniel Huberdeau

Luc Daniel Huberdeau
May 8, 2010 – February 10, 2021

We will never forget the moment his heart stopped and ours kept beating. Surrounded by his parents and grandparents, on February 10, 2021, Luc was finally freed from his battle after years of fighting to be in our lives.

Luc was first diagnosed with Leukemia in 2016 followed by a successful remission and completion of a 3 ½ year treatment. However, his journey was not always easy and no matter how hard we fought, his cancer wouldn’t let up. Finally, after a successful stem cell transplant in November 2020, he experienced a series of complications which would prove to be more than his little body could handle.

We are eternally grateful for Luc’s army of nurses, physicians and staff at Cancer Care, CK5 and the PICU. Their endless commitment, devotion and sensitivity forged strong bonds and eased the challenges of our long-term experience. He made so many new friends who never made him feel sick, weak or afraid. Those final vulnerable moments, with our team by our side, felt like the safety net we needed. We will always remember the shared anguish and impact his loss had on those who tirelessly devoted themselves to his life.

Luc is survived by his father Justin; mother Lianne and little sisters Stella and Olivia. As the firstborn grandson in both families, Luc was adored by his grandparents (Paul & Lynne Rochon, Janice & Ernest (deceased) Huberdeau); his aunts and uncles (Marty Rochon & Julia Kack, Daniel Rochon, Dean & Rachelle McGregor); and most of all, his little cousins (Kaleb, Emrie and Emmy).

No matter what the issue, whether it was being in the hospital, chemotherapy, constant pokes and procedures, the absence of his friends and extended family or waiting to soon feel better, he never complained. He woke up every morning, in the moment, being kind, smiley, respectful, loving and positive, without ever feeling cheated, angry or scared.

He loved playing Lego, mini sticks, bike riding and video games. He always looked forward to being able to go to his new cottage, so he could chop wood, have a campfire, use his bb gun and make sand castles. He possessed innocence and wonder, never ceasing to be amazed by nature’s simple beauties and curiosities.

He wanted so much to continue to live in the world where he could play hockey with the Seals again, follow through on his Dream Factory trip to Disney World, ride a dirt bike and live a normal 10-year-old life.

He is remembered by his école Lacerte school mates, hockey buddies and friends as everyone’s cheerleader and hero. A positive, humble and friendly child who always smiled and found the best in people. He was always concerned about others and protective of his friends, siblings and cousins.

The recent outpouring of love and support speaks volumes to his ever-loving nature, sensitivity and warmth. He never wanted to let us down, always an optimist who hoped for a long life free from illness and pain and surrounded by family. He had a wisdom beyond his years and didn’t demand much from this world. He still had so much to give and has left such a void in so many people’s hearts.

We wish that we could love you back to life and will always keep talking about you. You deserve to be remembered.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, when we can all gather and share in our happy memories. In the meantime, please consider adding stories, words of love or memories to this page. His memories can live on here and be a place where we can all go when we need to be lifted by his sweet smile.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Children’s Hospital Foundation (https://goodbear.ca/), Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support group (https://www.manitobacandlelighters.org/) or the Dream Factory (https://www.thedreamfactory.ca/) to help ease the experience for other families and allow Luc to return the gift to those amazing people who lifted us when we needed it most.
