Obituary for Lloyd Desmond Horie Smith

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. Lloyd led a wonderful life full of love and compassion for his family, he was always supportive in every way. Lloyd is survived by his wife Christina (nee Kerr), daughters Cathy Willms (Dave), Linda Dawson, and his sons Geoffrey (Tannis) Alexander (Joanna), grandchildren Brian Willms (Salma), Amanda Willms, Meagan Dawson (Logan Gaudet), Paige Dawson, Stephan Smith, Julia Smith and Justin Smith and great grandchild Ella Willms. The family extends gracious thanks to all the wonderful staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care ward, the Health Science Center Cancer Care and to Reverend Patrick Woodbeck of the Windsor Park United Church for all their wonderful care and support. A private service will be held for his interment. Donations in Lloyd’s memorium to the Canadian Cancer Society-Manitoba are appreciated.

Lloyd was born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of John and Margaret (nee Horie). He later met the love of his life, Christina Kerr, on the Gaspe’ Coast in the community of Porte Daniel. They married on July 2nd, 1960 in Christina’s home town of Oak Bay, Quebec. Shortly after, daughter Cathy came along. They soon found themselves in Montreal, where Linda and Geoffrey joined the family. In 1971, with the station wagon loaded and pulling a camper trailer, with the kids and family dog Lucky, they headed west to settle in Winnipeg. Alex arrived shortly after and roots were established.

Lloyd spent most of his working life with Health Canada as a chemist and later as a manager with the Food and Drug Protection Unit. Lloyd retired in 1997.

A great passion of Lloyd’s was the family cottage located in the beautiful Whiteshell Provincial Park. As his children grew up and pursued their careers and their own families, the cottage became the main meeting place for many family gatherings over the years and this continues. It is quite common to find several of the families with grandchildren and his great-grandchild gathered around a bonfire in the backyard or spending afternoons gathered on the family dock sharing many laughs and creating wonderful memories.

Lloyd had a great love for dogs and this was passed on to his children. At times, dogs would outnumber people on the family dock!

One of Lloyd’s past times was model trains. He had an extensive and intricate HO scale train set that he proudly displayed on a CTV news segment. He was an active member of the Winnipeg Model Railway Club.

Both Alex and Geoff grew up as “trouble light kids” spending many hours fixing snowmobiles and dirt bikes that seemed to break down on a weekly basis yet provided many weekends of fun in the Whiteshell. Lloyd also had his children help with numerous cottage additions and other building projects, giving them the skills they continue to use on their own projects.

It is very difficult to express all the love and gratitude that we all have for Lloyd, dad, grandpa! He was a wonderful man who did so very well providing for his wife, children, and their families. All of the children have grown up successful in so many ways. We all enjoy getting together to share so many laughs and good times with each other. We are all so thankful for the life experiences we have because of the man you have been in our lives.

We love you dad!
