Obituary for Jeanne Lily Block

JEANNE LILY BLOCK
November 9, 1940 – November 19, 2020

Jeanne Lily Block, 80, passed away peacefully in her home with her daughter by her side November 19, 2020. She was born November 9, 1940 in Borden, Saskatchewan to John and Susan O’Bertos. Jeanne grew up in Radisson, Saskatchewan. She married Ronald Block in 1969 who preceded her in death in 2009. She was the beloved mother of Susan and David, adoring grandma of Jacob, Alexis, Colton, and Luke, proud sister, and loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Block; four brothers John, Nick, Bill, and Walter; and her sister Rose Pidwerbesky.

Jeanne loved her job as a flight attendant for Air Canada. She loved jet setting around the World, meeting new people - both ordinary and famous, visiting iconic city landmarks, attending the best theatre productions around the World, and collecting treasures along the way.

Jeanne rarely stayed still. There was never a job too large or too small that she would not tackle. If a couch needed to be recovered, she taught herself how to sew. When she heard kids needed mittens and toques, she taught herself to knit. She had many hobbies over the years, including painting, stain glass, quilting, assembling puzzles, and she even owned her own horse. She loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals and baking for her family. She made the best pies, jams, cookies, perogies, borscht, weekday dinners, and Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner. Her creations will be missed.

Jeanne cherished her friendships and time spent with them on the golf course, playing cards, celebrating Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, traveling across the World, and just chatting over a glass of wine. She was a long time member of St.Boniface Golf Club. She spent many summers at her Victoria Beach cottage enjoying relaxing summers and entertaining friends.

In retirement, Jeanne spent her time volunteering for the Christmas Cheer Board. She enjoyed spending countless days wrapping presents, packing food hampers, and talking to families. She helped organize and volunteered with Dreams Take Flight Winnipeg. She worked hard to fundraise and host their annual casino night, all to make sure children could spend a day at Walt Disney World in Florida. Although exhausting, this was always one of her favourite days of the year.

She was a huge sports fan and loved watching golf, tennis, curling, hockey, football, figure skating, horse jumping, and all things Olympics. She spent many a day in a gym, rink, or sport field watching her own children compete. Some of her favourite moments were traveling to watch her kids play in tournaments and championships across the country and of course trips to the United States.

Jeanne is survived by two of her brothers George and Ted O’Bertos, who she loved deeply and spoke about often. Family was very important to Jeanne. She would head home (Radisson) frequently and would show up, family in hand, on many relatives’ door steps. Her children grew up loved, supported, and never without. She was also known to buy way too many Christmas presents.

She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christmas Cheer Board or Dreams Take Flight.
