Obituary for Lillian Elizabeth Zaretski (Zaborniak)

Lillian Elizabeth Zaretski

On May 22, 2023, Lillian Elizabeth Zaretski passed away peacefully at the age of 92, at Lions Manor in Winnipeg.

Lillian was born July 1, 1930 in Melrose MB, the youngest child of Jon and Mary (Rosmus) Zaborniak. Moving from the farm to Winnipeg, Lillian worked in the Eaton Mail Order Catalogue Department for many years. In 1952 she met and married Albert Zaretski (1929 – 1986). Their first son, Glenn, was born in 1954 followed by Bruce in 1957.

Transcona was Lil’s home from 1957 until 2019 where she attended Transcona Memorial United Church with Bert until his passing in 1986. She then attended Blessed Sacrament Parish before moving to Lions Manor.

Lil was a stay at home mom who volunteered extensively with the church and in the community. She loved to socialize and entertain friends, attending literally hundreds of weddings, socials, dances and family gatherings. Her perogies, muffins, tarts and pies were the best. She loved to hand out candies and chocolate bars to visitors, friends, hired help, and strangers she’d just met at the store or the waiting room. This earned her the title of The Candy Lady which gave her much joy. She was also known as Auntie Little by many of her friends’ grand children. Lillian loved cycling, curling, watching Blue Jays games, mall walking and traveling.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Jon and Mary; brothers, Frank, Walter and Casey; sister, Sue; husband, Bert, and grandson Russell. She is survived by her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Lions Manor for the care and compassion shown to Lillian. They all loved her friendly ways and sunny personality.

Instead of flowers donations can be made in her name to The Canadian Cancer Society in honour of Bert. This cause was a favorite one for Lil.

A memorial Service celebrating Lillian’s life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 10:30 am, in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street.
