Obituary for Keith Robert Smith

Keith Robert Smith
July 10, 1934 – October 29, 2022

Keith Smith passed away peacefully in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 29th, 2022 at the age of 88.

Keith is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda (Steiss) Smith and their children Heather Smith (Bob) and Brad Smith (Adriana) as well as his grandchildren Sydney, Brady, Jordan and Jeffrey. Keith was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Ada and infant daughter Pamela.

Keith grew up in and around McCreary, Manitoba where he attended Royal Oak school, helped on the farm and played sports, surrounded by friends. Dad was fond of saying that his path to and from school was “uphill both ways” with a smile. Keith was the last surviving, youngest of eight brothers and three sisters remaining close to his family throughout his life who had an important place in his life.

Dad left home at a young age to work on pipelines in Saskatchewan and then as a surveyor and superintendent of significant construction projects across Manitoba with the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) of the Federal Government for 35 years. Dad had a strong work ethic and enjoyed his time working in rural communities which promoted soil conservation and the development of water resources to maintain a viable agriculture industry and sound rural economy. A proud moment was receiving his 25 years of service plaque signed by the Prime Minister of the day, Joe Clark.

After retiring Dad enjoyed travelling with Mom to Mexico, Hawaii, Texas and Arizona. Florida was another favorite destination for Baseball Spring Training as the enjoyment of sports was a constant throughout his life.

Dad and Mom moved to Winnipeg in 1973 where they lived together in the same house until Dad’s passing, raising a family and enjoying the outdoors whenever possible.

We would like to thank all of the staff at Vista Park Lodge for their excellent care with Dad during his short stay in the final stage of his life.

Rest in peace.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. If you would like to honour Keith, you can do so by making a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and/or sharing a memory of Keith on the memory wall link at the top of this page.
