Obituary for Justin Aaron Smith

JUSTIN AARON SMITH
December 13. 1996 - December 1, 2020

Justin was born on Friday, December 13th, 1996 at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg. He was a very small baby, and spent the first few hours of his life in an incubator, however was discharged later the same day to be at home with his family.

Justin is survived by his parents, Len & Cheryl, his siblings, Donovan (Sierra), Chana and Kazpar, his niece, Lylac, his grandmothers Joyce & Jeanne, as well as many aunts, uncles & cousins.

Justin had a love of life and a love of people. He had a light about him that touched many people; they seemed to be drawn to him. He made friends with everyone who crossed his path; he never passed up an opportunity to talk to anyone within earshot. His friendly outgoing manner endeared him to all.

Justin loved video games, both online and offline. He was especially passionate about Pokémon and never failed to Catch Them All in every one of his games. He loved to play Minecraft online with his brother and a very close friend of theirs.

Justin was very determined in everything he did, and never let anyone get in his way or tell him it couldn’t be done. He had very ambitious goals and dreams and never hesitated to try to reach them. One of his greatest dreams was to become a famous YouTube and Social Media influencer so he could make an impact on the world.

Justin faced many challenges and taught us to face challenges ourselves. He was not afraid to ask questions and was never afraid to be himself, regardless of what others felt.

Justin longed to move to Boston since he had many memories of his trips to Boston Children’s Hospital, and always felt he had a part of Boston within him. He made us all realize how important it is to be a close knit family during these trips. With all the challenges he faced there, it became very important for us all to be close and to be there for and with him. He was always very determined to keep up with his siblings, which is part of what made him strong enough to overcome the most difficult times.

Justin loved hugs and always had many to go around, especially for all his family, all of whom he loved dearly. His generosity knew no bounds, he was always generous to a fault, whether it be to friends or family. He was willing to help anyone at any time, if it was within his means to do so.

We would like to express our thanks to all who have helped Justin through the years, especially the medical staff at Children’s Variety Heart Centre, St Boniface Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, and a very special thank you to Children’s Wish Foundation, who helped Justin get the Wish he so badly wanted, and to the staff at SCE Life Works, Simiril and the Project Search program, who helped Justin succeed in his independence.

We will be having a private family service for Justin and a celebration of life will follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we would like to ask that any donations be made in Justin’s memory to the Children’s Variety Heart Centre or Children’s Wish Foundation.

During this time, as we are unable to gather and celebrate Justin’s life, we would like to ask each one of you to honour his life by living a day like Justin would have. If there was someone you wanted to meet, go and say hi. If there was a show you wanted to watch, watch it. If you wanted to learn something new, learn it. If you wanted to try a new recipe, try it. But most importantly, try to make a difference in the life of someone you pass by everyday but have never spoken with, a simple smile and a hello may mean the world to a person in that moment.
