Obituary for Joyce Adelaine Christine McLeod (Engel)

JOYCE ADELAINE CHRISTINE McLEOD
(nee ENGEL)
1937-2023

On December 24, 2023, Joyce passed away peacefully following complications due to an accident. Joyce was predeceased by her husband Angus, parents Lydia and Arnold Engel, sister Mabel Binnie, and sister-in-law Doris Engel. Joyce is survived by her children Tanis (Lorne) and Mathew (Christine); grandchildren Nicholas (Sarah), Laura, Jennifer (Brendan), and Dale (Christine); five great-grandchildren; siblings and extended family and friends.

Born in Limerick, Saskatchewan Joyce obtained her teaching degree at Indian Head teacher’s college. With her husband Angus McLeod (of Winnipeg), Joyce moved to Winnipeg to begin her teaching career and start a family.

Facing the challenges of being widowed at the age of 27 with two young children, Joyce, with the help of family and friends, persevered and obtained her Master of Education degree and thrived in her career, primarily at Hampstead School. She was often approached in public by former students who were thrilled to see their grade one teacher!

Those who knew Joyce well recognized her strength and determination, zest for life, and pride of independence. Joyce had many interests and belonged to numerous groups: long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; various music ensembles playing instruments such as accordion, piano, flute, and bells; line dancing; various exercise groups; and more.

Joyce’s passion for travel was evident. From taking her young daughter and son on a European tour in 1976 to enjoying countless trips and cruises to destinations on this little rock we call earth. She took advantage of opportunities to travel to so many different destinations over the course of her long adventurous life. Always ‘in’ for a trip, whether spontaneous or one planned long in advance, to destinations near or far. Travelling with family, friends, other teachers, her Sorority friends, or the Archwood 55 gang, if there was a sign-up sheet for travel or a concert, Joyce’s name was on it.

Joyce loved fashion and made a point of looking her best whether at a gala event, a casino trip, a casual dinner date, or headed to the lake for a weekend. Wearing fashionable outfits with accessories for every occasion. Joyce was a beautiful woman and always ready to offer a friendly greeting or stop to chat.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the Staff at HSC, particularly on Ward RR6 for their outstanding care of Joyce. Brenda and the entire RR6 team are truly angels that walk among us.

As per Joyce’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private interment will be held at a later date.

Joyce had a special affection for her grand-dogs, past and present. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an animal shelter or charity of choice.
