Obituary for Bill (Gumby) Hogan

Bill (Gumby) Hogan
(July 2, 1956 – Oct 9, 2020)

It is with great sadness that our family has to announce the sudden passing of Bill Hogan, (Gumby) at the St Boniface Hospital on October 9th, 2020. Bill was 64. He was predeceased by his mother (Phyllis Anna Williams) and his father (Lloyd Hogan). Bill leaves behind his sisters: Eva Bader (Barry), Glenda Reynolds (Dave) and Paddy Weitzel (Brad). Bill has also left behind several nieces and nephews: Kari, Shannon, Kelly, Chris, Cory, Shawna, Shade, Colin, Ethan, Emma, Adam, Aaron, Teddy, Azalea, Kingsley and Aveah.

Bill was the apple of his sisters’ eyes. He was an amazingly kind, generous and wonderful brother who always had our backs. He grew up in a family of women, who loved him dearly. Family was everything to Bill. He took good care of his sisters and they took good care of him. He loved to spoil his nieces and nephews. At family gatherings Bill could always be found teasing the kids. One of Bill’s favorite sayings to the kids was: “go tell your mother she wants you”. Bill loved his pets; Dani was his most recent cat who provided Bill with endless love and company. Prior to that there was Toba his cockapoo, and his cats: Gumby, Pokey, and Winnie. Many of them named after or in honor of his home town of Winnipeg. Bill spoiled his pets, and he lovingly let them run his life.

Bill had many childhood friends who were forever in his heart; Al, Chuck, Todd, Gary and Maggie, and Patrick, to name a few. Bill loved meeting up with friends and family for brunches, and would do so at any opportunity.

Bill was a self made career professional. Bill’s successes were something his mother was always very proud of. He had an esteemed 27 year career with Square D, later to be Schneider Electric, where he worked his way up to executive levels. When he left Schneider Electric in 2005, he decided to move back to Winnipeg. Bill was hired by National Industrial Communications Inc., in Winnipeg, where he eventually retired from in 2018.

Bill’s favorite past time was sports, of any kind. He had season tickets to the Bombers as well as the Winnipeg Jets. Bill liked attending the games with Al, and many of his other friends. Bill was a huge fan of both teams and was also their biggest critic. When we were kids Bill and Eva used to take over our TV and make Glenda and Paddy watch sports, all the time. Bill loved his electronics and always kept up with the latest technologies, but he especially loved his TV.

Bill had a dry sense of humor, and he had many what we called “billisms”, such as; “skirt work”, “you can agree with me or be wrong” and many others.

Bill enjoyed a good debate, whether it was related to life in general, sports or politics.
Sarcasm was always a part of the conversation.

Bill loved to spend his winter escapes in Mexico with his sisters and brother-in-laws.
He enjoyed Mexican cuisine and eating out in the Mexican restaurants. He always appreciated it when his sisters or brother-in-laws would cook him a good meal.

Bill was a very large presence in our lives, and we are all going to miss him tremendously. He is gone, but he will never be forgotten.

If so desired, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, in Bill’s honor.

Rest in peace Bill.
