Obituary for John Mascarenhas

JOHN MASCARENHAS

After a long struggle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, John passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving family on Saturday, January 2, 2021. He handled his illness with great courage and resigned himself, very early in his illness, to the fact that there was no cure.

John grew up in India in a family of nine siblings and family was extremely important to him. He had great admiration and love for his mother who brought up nine children on her own after losing her husband at a very young age. The numerous challenges faced by the family kept them closely connected well into their adult lives. Geographic separation did not keep them from continuing to be a tightly knit family. After marrying Maria, he gained a second family who loved him dearly as a son and brother.

After having lived in the Middle East for 12 years, John and his family moved to Canada in 1989. Although Winnipeg was initially not intended to be their final home, John grew to love Winnipeg (even the snow and cold!). He thought it was an ideal place to settle down and raise his two sons, Randy and Rohith. He wanted the best for them and was extremely proud of the men they grew up to be, and of their accomplishments.

John always wanted a daughter and was ecstatic when Randy brought Danielle into the family and welcomed her as the daughter he did not have. One of the happiest times of his life were the births of his two grandsons, Hudson and Chase. He adored them and beamed every time they called him ‘Papa’. He thought this was the greatest title he could have. John was fortunate to have spent some time with Rohith’s partner, Amber, in the last few months and welcomed her as a second daughter.

John and Maria celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on December 26, 2020, and we truly believe he held on so he could spend one last Christmas and Anniversary with his family.

The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Home Program, and in particular, the wonderful, caring nurses that provided comfort and peace to John and Maria the last few months. Without their help, compassion and kindness we could not have taken care of John at home until his passing.
