Obituary for John Alan Davidson

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our father, John Alan Davidson, on February 11, 2022, in Sarasota, Florida, with his partner, Wanda, and his three children by his side. Dad was 78 years old.

Dad was predeceased by his mother Hilda and his father Lloyd.

Dad was born on September 19,1943 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was the youngest of three children. He grew up in the Norwood area and while attending Kelvin High School, dad met our mother, Marilyn, whom he married in 1966.

During his early years, Dad played high school football; a strong and elusive fullback. He went on to play for the St. James Rods, of the Canadian Junior Football League, who later won the National Championship “Shrine Bowl” in 1961. Dad, along with his teammates, were inducted in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Dad then shifted his sights on a postsecondary education in Law at the University of Manitoba, where he was called to the Bar in June 1970.

Dad was an accomplished attorney, working diligently up until his last day with us, where he cultivated many long-lasting clients and friendships. Dad was also a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg St. Boniface - St. Vital Chapter.

Dad started “dating" his life partner and best friend of 34 years, Wanda, in 1988, after meeting at the hockey rink. They enjoyed summers at the lake, winters in Florida, and all the times in between with their family and friends and in the quiet comfort of each other.

Throughout his life, Dad was passionate about sports, spending many Winnipeg winters taking his sons and grandchildren to hockey. To escape those winters, Dad also enjoyed many years traveling to the warmer climates of Florida, and later, to California, to visit his daughter. In the summer months, it was full steam ahead to spend time with his family at the lake cabins in Ontario.

Dad leaves to cherish his memory, his partner Wanda, his children Paul (Christine), Susan (Reuben), and Grant (Karen), his step-sons Graham, Drew, and Adam (Tiffany, Mason), along with his grandchildren Eric, Olivia, and Eaton. Dad will be missed by his brother Joel, sister Rosalie, Birtle-based cousins, law buddies, fellow rotarians, and many other dear friends and associates.

Dad’s children and grandchildren were always his most cherished and proud accomplishments. We love and miss him dearly and hold close the memories of our generous, intelligent, reliable, caring, charming, and thoughtful father.

See you at the lake, Dad!

Memorial service to honour Dad’s life will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at E.J. Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald Street.
