Obituary for Joan Barbara Shelton

Joan Shelton

Tragically, Joan Barbara Shelton passed on August 9, 2021 due to injuries sustained from a hit and run. Predeceased by parents Jack and Jeanne Shelton, brother John Shelton and grandnephew Sam Shelton. Joan is survived by sister-in-law Grace Shelton, nephew Norm (Tracey) Shelton and children Ben, Hayley and Taylor; and niece Lori (Keith) Bilous and their daughters Kirstin and Miranda.

Born March 4, 1933 in Winnipeg, Joan spent most of her childhood in Prince Rupert and Victoria with her father’s military career. She lived in Calgary, Vancouver and northern BC before returning to Winnipeg in 1969 to pursue a career in nursing.

While she never married or had children of her own, Joan’s happiest and most treasured times were spent with her niece and nephew and their children. From taking them on adventures and attending each celebration to writing heartfelt, personal messages in every birthday and Christmas card, Joan loved her family and enjoyed watching her grandnieces and grandnephew become young adults.

Joan’s love of family led her to become a genealogy buff and she spent countless hours researching and cataloguing her family roots – even travelling to Salt Lake City in her early 80’s to visit the world’s largest genealogy library. She loved to travel and hoped to go on a European river cruise when COVID restrictions eased.

Joan loved the majesty of nature and that helped her discover a new passion later in life at the Forum Art Centre. A talented artist, her creative and colourful paintings are treasured heirlooms in her family’s homes.

A strong and proud woman, Joan was fiercely independent. She found adventure wherever she went, walking and busing to all corners of the city. At 85, she moved to a seniors residence, only to move out months later saying she was “too young” to live there. Joan was a kind and generous soul who gave to charity and helped those in need whenever she could.

Following Joan’s wishes, there will be a private family gathering and cremation. A special thank you to the Winnipeg Police and Fire Parademic Services, Drs. Wtorek and McCarthy, nurses Anna and Carolyn and the many bystanders for their kindness and compassion to our dear Aunty Joan. May she rest in peace.
