Obituary for Jean Charles Patrick Fontaine

Jean Charles Patrick Fontaine
September 18, 1946 – January 11, 2024

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jean Fontaine, peacefully, with family at his side. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years Karen, sons JP (Meagan), Matt (Erika), daughters Michelle (Richard), Tammy (Todd), grandchildren Dominik, Kendall, Pascal, Frankie, Deneige, Tish, Braxton, and sister Annette (Gerry). He is also fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Bunny, Annette (Larry), Diane (Ernie) and brothers-in-law Edward (Myrna), Gerald (Linda), and many nieces, nephews, cousins in France, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Georges and Mary, brothers Rob and Georges, and granddaughter Jade.

Jean was in the insurance industry for 53 years – Harriott & Associates, AON (Reed Stenhouse), HED (Hayhurst Elias Dudek) and TCIM (Trans Canada Insurance Marketing), with the exception of his first year out of school when he worked for the Red Top Sports Shop. He loved all the people he worked with, his many customers and associates. He was always grateful for all his friends. His younger years were spent playing or coaching baseball, hockey or football, in Norwood or the St. Vital area, where he had lifelong friendships through his love of sports. He was inducted into the St. Vital Mustangs Football Hall of Fame for coaching and two championship football teams.

Jean loved the cottage at Myrtle Rapids. With the help of family and friends White Pine Lodge was built on the beautiful Winnipeg River. Many joyful, happy moments included family reunions, fishing trips in and around Minaki Lodge, golf trips to Branson, overseas trips to France to visit extended family and to England to visit Lloyd’s of London.

Never was there a man like Jean who always placed others before himself. He had so many wonderful qualities – friendly, loving, caring, generous, considerate, religious. One of a kind. He will be greatly missed. Thank you so much to the palliative care team who gave Jean the very best of care over the past few months.

Viewing will take place at St. Timothy Parish, 135 John Forsyth Road, at 10:30 am on Friday, January 19, 2024, with the funeral mass at 11:00 am, followed by refreshments and a light lunch. Interment will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery. In Jean’s memory, if you so desire, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Diabetes Canada.
