Obituary for Jerry (Jaroslav) Margits

Jerry (Jaroslav) Margits

With heavy hearts, The Margits family announces the passing of Jerry (Jaroslav) Margits on Monday, October 24, 2022, at the age of 78, due to health complications. Jerry’s beginnings started in Croatia. His stepfather emigrated first to Canada in January 1952, later that same year followed by his mother (Maria), and his sister Maria.

Throughout Jerry’s life he lived by a saying: “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one”; and true to his words, he tinkered with different trades but especially loved woodworking, math, and the sciences.

Jerry was a son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, and loved by everyone. He had a contagious sense of humor which could light up the room and he is greatly missed. Jerry spent his last days at The Grace hospital and was surrounded by family.

He is survived by his loving wife Stefica; his two daughters, Susan (Richard) and Valerie (John); Grandchildren, Joeseph (Tashina), Shannan, and Autumn; Great Grandchildren, Peyten and Benjamin; Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, along with his nieces and nephews.

Dad loved to garden, bake, sit outside on the step in the sun, and listen to Polkas. He loved dogs, especially Susan’s dog, Buddy and Valerie’s cat named Luci. He spent many hours playing games on his iPad; one of his favorites was called Woody (a stacking game similar to Tetris). Dad also loved to attend Canadian and American Air Shows.

A memorial service will be held at E.J. Coutu & Co. Funeral Home, 680 Archibald Street at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023. Interment will follow in Fort Garry Roman Catholic Cemetery at 826 Crescent Drive, Winnipeg, MB. We would like to thank all the caregivers, especially, Dr. Harding and staff and all who took care of Jerry throughout his earthly journey.

In honor of Jerry’s memory, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB. or The Winnipeg Humane Society, please contact them at 204-982-2041 to offer a commemorative gift. Jerry held these organizations close to his heart, and supporting their mission would be a fitting tribute to his legacy.
