Obituary for Jim Young

JIM YOUNG
December 7, 1950 – August 2, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jim Young, peacefully with his family by his side, on August 2, 2021 at the age of 70. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, family and friends whose lives he greatly impacted. Jim leaves behind his adoring wife of 47 years, Walene; his sons, Jeff (Lindsay), Jamie (Megan); his three grandsons who were the light of his life, Jaden, Jackson, Jace, and his sister, Gaay (Ulrich) Bedarf, as well as his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and his numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim grew up in the Elm Park neighbourhood in St. Vital with his mom, dad and sister. He attended Windsor School and spent his summers camping at White Lake. It was there that he got into competitive water skiing and met the love of his life, Walene. In the fall of 1973 Jim and Walene were married surrounded by family and friends. Shortly afterwards, they welcomed their sons Jeffery and Jamie. They continued to spend their summers camping at White Lake until they bought their cabin at Falcon Lake where they’ve spent their summer days ever since.

Jim started working for Basar Heating and Air Conditioning in 1973. After working on the tools for numerous years, he became a partner. Jim along with his partners Mel Melstead and Graham Chaplin turned Basar into a leader within the sheet metal industry in Winnipeg. At the end of 2008, Jim retired, spending his winters in Palm Springs and summers at Falcon Lake where he started to work at the Falcon Lake Golf Course. There he made numerous friends and memories up until the very day he passed.

Sports were always a huge part of Jim's life. Whether it was cheering his sons on at the rink, or flying out to Chilliwack B.C. to watch a football game, Jim was their number one fan. As a lifelong Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan season ticket holder for over 30 years, Jim would always attend games and took his beautiful wife to numerous Grey Cups across Canada. This culminated in 2019 when his team finally won the championship after a 30-year drought as he watched, cheered and cried tears of joy with his family by his side.

To say that Jim loved his grandchildren is an understatement. In August of 2009, when Jaden was born, Jim experienced a love unlike any he had ever experienced. Jim was proud beyond belief and that love only multiplied with the arrival of Jackson, and then Jace. Whether it was a boat ride, a trip to the candy store or cheering them on in the stands, Jim always had time for his grandsons as they were truly special to him.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Friday, September 3, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the Norwood Hotel. Thank you to the staff at Lake of the Woods Hospital who kept him comfortable in his final hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scleroderma Association of Manitoba.
