Obituary for Hardo Wigbert Bewer

Hardo died peacefully on April 25, 2023 surrounded by his family.

Hardo was born in Berlin Germany on March 9, 1941 to Adolf, a brewmaster and Lisl (Binndeman), a teacher. He had three older siblings Rudy, Fred and Lore. They lived in Berlin, Germany and then in a refugee camp in the Balck Forest. Hardo was eleven when the family was accepted as immigrants to Canada. His family found themselves in Virden, Manitoba.

The early years in Canada were not easy but Dad was always an optimist and enjoyed growing up in the Assiniboine valley where he took great joy in helping out on the newly acquired family farm and spending time with his dog Kliener.

In 1964, Dad found himself at a barn dance in Virden with his brother Rudy. As luck would have it, there was a new teacher from Burnley, England in attendance. She had come to Canada for a one-year teaching job. Dad asked her to dance, and a romance blossomed.

Hardo and Judy set up shop on the farm and had four boys, Kirk, Dan, Tim, and Kristoph. Hardo was very enterprising when it came to farming and decided to farm chemical-free for 40 years before the term organic became vogue. He was very much into regenerative farming and through his methods, he certainly left the land in better condition than when he found it.

In 1977, the couple, along with their young family decided to live in Birtle Manitoba, where he had a teaching job.

There they found great community with lots of similar aged children. Hardo and Judy were employed as teachers. The years in Birtle were happy, and healthy, full of activities such as hockey, music, baseball, swimming, Cubs and scouts. Hardo continued to teach and farm.

As the children grew up, Hardo and Judy made the move to Winnipeg to be closer to the children; Kirk, Dan (Jen), Tim (Vanessa) and Kristoph (Vania). This is a wonderful chapter for the Bewer family, and they were blessed with Kayla, Madison, Ethan, Emily, Ludo, Bruno, Otilia, Kahlessi, Charlie, Lowen and Gracie.

In his autumn years, Hardo enjoyed his grown four boys, their partners and the grandchildren. He enjoyed taking trips with Judy to the Canadian Rockies, Europe, Mexico and Haida Gwai.

He will be greatly missed and will forever remain in our hearts.
