Obituary for Gladys Lavina Pedrick

Gladys Lavina Pedrick

(nee Anderson)

February 24, 1925 – March 14, 2015

After 90 wonderful years, Gladys leaves her loving children Linda (John Wells), Dean (Leslie), Kerry, Tim (Sandy) and Lianne (Phil Rizzuto); grandchildren Stephanie (great-grandson Ewan), Joey (Kelly, great-grandchildren Owen and Emma), Blake, Christina, Scott, Greg, Ben Rizzuto, Kyle, Samantha Rizzuto, Ryan, Craig and Nathaniel; brother Albert, sisters Marjorie and Irene (Len), and sister-in-law Margaret.
She was predeceased by her husband Roy, eldest brother Lorne and sister Alice.

Gladys was born and raised on a farm near Elkhorn, Manitoba. She taught in a one-room school house as a young woman before making her way to Winnipeg where she began working her life-long magic as a seamstress. She married Roy in 1948, and together they raised their family in the St. Vital home where she lived the rest of her days. She sewed the most beautiful fashions for herself, her family, and friends, as well as countless dance costumes and bridal gowns over the years. Her tremendous style and grace were stitched into every piece she created.
Gladys was particularly proud of her Scandinavian roots and was a self-proclaimed Viking. In 1995, she organized and hosted an Anderson family reunion in Winnipeg, and was touched by the effort her siblings and extended families made to attend.
She was known for her warm, red kitchen and was always happy to set an extra place at the dinner table. She left her grandchildren with wonderful memories of baking cookies with Grandma, and left her entire family with a collection of comforting recipes that will live on for generations. She lived a vibrant, healthy and grateful life until the end, always enjoying family gatherings (especially bowling parties), her bridge club, and walks in St. Vital Park.
Our family would like to sincerely thank Mom’s long-time caregiver and good friend Marion Tronrud, as well as the many dedicated friends who visited her often in hospital – including Margaret Tapley, Alma Verdonck and Sharon Bauman.
In respect of Mom’s explicit wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, the immediate family will gather later this year to celebrate and honour her life. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who so desire to make a donation in Gladys’ memory to a charity of your choice.
