Obituary for Gertrude Francoise St. Amant (Allard)

.

Gertrude will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Denis, of 61 years, her daughters Ginette, Muriel (Jeff), her son Paul (Jodi), sister in laws: Jeannette St.Amant, Yolande (Jean-Paul) Dupuis, brother in law: Gilbert St. Amant; her sisters: Jeannine, Anita, Angela, and her brother André (Sylvia), and sister in law Claire-Annette. She cherished her grandchildren: James, Melina, Joe, and many other relatives and friends. She was pre-deceased by her parents Bertha and Raoul Allard, her brothers: Roland, Fernand, Maurice; her sisters: Yvette (Don) and most recently Lucille (Bob) both passed on December 30th, 2023, and in laws: René, and Jeannine (Hubert).

Gertrude was raised on a farm in Ste. Eustache, the sixth of 10 siblings. She left high school to help raise her younger siblings. Gertrude met the love of her life, Denis St. Amant, at a dance in “Baie St. Paul”. A year later, they married and moved into an apartment on Corydon Avenue, near Confusion Corner. Gertrude continued her studies to later work as a data entry operator. She worked in payroll and soon began a 22 year career at the University of Manitoba.

In July 1962, they bought their first home in St. Norbert, Manitoba, where for over 38 years, they raise their family and created lasting friendships. In her new home, she quickly utilized the skills she had learned by her mother’s side. Cooking, sewing, cleaning, organizing, all in a quick and efficient manner that would earn her the nickname “Mme Vite! Vite!” Of these skills, sewing may have been her most outstanding. She sewed her children’s dresses, miniskirts, pants, vests, pantsuits, Halloween costumes and even winter coats.

In August 2002, Gertrude and Denis moved to the Winnipeg Beach area, where they met many friends. After retirement, she didn’t loose her competitive edge and would play cribbage with anyone willing to rise to the challenge. They truly enjoyed their time in the Interlake, where they entertained their family, went out for pickerel and chips at the local restaurants, and walked the boardwalk. To the end, Gertie was the epitome of kindness and joie de vivre.

We wish to thank the Concordia Hospital unit 3W Health Care Team, for their support, devotion, and care, during the past three months.

Please join us at a celebration of Gertrude‘s life on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at 2 PM, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 774 Archibald St., Winnipeg, Manitoba, with Father Armand LeGal presiding.
