Obituary for Gerard Joseph Desharnais

At the age of 88, Gérard Desharnais passed away peacefully at Action Marguerite, (St.Boniface) on December 31, 2021. He was predeceased and mourned the loss of his cherished wife, Noëllia, of 60 years, his eldest son Guy (Ti-Guy), by his parents; Zéphirin and Adrienne (née Malo), his brothers; André, Denis, Paul, and Arthur, his sisters Marguerite Poirier, Annette Saltel and Thérèse Duval. He will be lovingly remembered by his sons Marc (Bonny) and Norman (Karen), grandchildren: Raymond, Christine, Jamie, Julie, Danielle and Sylvie, his sisters Cécile Vouriot, Marie (Doug) Zerbin, Yvonne Gauthier, his brother-in-law Germain (Carmelle) Desrosiers, sisters-in-law Anna Jolicoeur, Simone Desharnais and Louise Douthart along with many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Gérard was born on the family farm in Carey, Manitoba on October 19th, 1933. He was educated at Otterburne College. From there he ventured directly into teaching at a one room rural school near St.Malo, Manitoba. He then studied at the Universities of Ottawa and Manitoba. His love for adventure brought him to teach in Northern Manitoba; Duck Bay and Camperville. This is where he met the love of his life, Noëllia Desrosiers, a beautiful and smart young lady who soon became his darling wife.

The young family moved to Transcona in 1963, after the birth of their 3rd son, where Gérard was hired as a French specialist at Central School. Later he taught in St.Boniface at Lacerte, Provencher and Marion Schools. In 1973, Gérard took a break from teaching junior high and started his own school, “Gérard’s Driving School” which he operated until the age of 77!

Gérard possédait une grande “joie de vivre!” Il aimait faire rire les gens avec ses histoires et ses taquineries. Il aimait surtout jouer avec ses petits enfants et leurs raconter des blagues. Il disait assez souvent “find a job that you love, and you never have to work another day in your life.” C’est comme ça qu’il raffolait de sont travail d’instruction de conduit d’automobile. Gérard était impliqué de différents façons dans sa Paroisse Notre Dame de l’Assomption.

We’d like to give our heartfelt thanks to all the staff from St.Boniface Dialysis Unit and 2DE Action Marguerite (St.Boniface) for their kind and compassionate care.

Au revoir au ciel!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care of Manitoba.

Funeral Mass Celebrating Gerard's life will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in Précieux Sang Roman Catholic Church, 200 Kenny Street.
