Obituary for Geraldine (Geri) Warren

It is with great sadness and a lifetime of wonderful memories that we share the news of Geraldine (Geri) Warren's passing on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the age of 76.

She is deeply missed by her devoted Husband, Gil Corthey; step-children, Glenn (Julie), and Christine (Bob) and their children and grandchildren; lifelong friends Freda (Bob), Pam (Karl) Lorna (Les) and all of the Spencer, Klawitter and Boe children and grandchildren, and many loving cousins and extended family & friends.

Geri was born and raised in Winnipeg's West End as the only child of Dorothy and Herbert Warren. Geri loved living in the West End, and often spoke of the many fond memories she had growing up alongside the Thorgrimson sisters, Freda, Pam and Lorna, who all became lifelong friends. Geri attended General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate.

After graduating from Daniel Mac, Geri’s first job was at Eaton’s Mail Order. After leaving that position, Geri had a few other clerical jobs, but ended up right back at Eatons downtown where she stayed for over twenty years, happily assisting her customers with her keen sense of style, sending them out of the store just a bit more dapper than when they came in. Geri’s infectious personality was perfectly suited for her chosen career, endearing her to co-workers and customers alike throughout the years.

After retiring from Eatons, Geri and Gil enjoyed travelling with family and friends, enjoying many of the beaches in Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, as well as a couple of overseas trips to Switzerland. Though Geri loved travelling the world, some of her fondest memories were of their time spent at Lynn Lake with her dearest friends, and at her and Gil’s cabin at Booster Lake; gardening, reading, fishing and painting. Geri was a talented artist who loved painting and creating beauty.

You can’t talk about Geri, without mentioning her immense love of all creatures, from the tiny ladybug to the polar bear. There was never a doubt that she had a bag of treats hidden in her purse at all times for all the cats and dogs in our family, and they all knew where to sit when it was dinner time.

She will be remembered and missed for her devotion to her family and friends, and loved by all she touched. Geri’s loving and caring nature left an irreplaceable mark on all those that were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.

The last year was challenging with Geri bravely battling the debilitating effects of cancer. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the dedicated teams at CancerCare Manitoba and the Misericordia Health Centre transitional unit on the 5th floor.

A celebration of Geri’s life will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 11:00am in the Coutu Funeral Chapel at 680 Archibald Street. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society, a cause very dear to Geri’s heart.
