Obituary for Garrie Raymond Smith

.

Garrie passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with dementia on February 14th, leaving to mourn his wife Rita who lost the love of her life on her valentine birthday. Garrie will be greatly missed by his fur baby Beau, in-laws Doug (Janice), Pat, Shawn, and Helen, as well as many nieces and nephews and long-time buddies, Ron and Ken.

He was predeceased by his parents, Marg and Bill Smith; his brothers Rick and Tim; and in-laws: Lenore, Geri (Ted), John and Al.

Garrie was raised in Elmwood and then East Kildonan. He worked for ten years as an electrician before joining the Manitoba Department of Justice as a Sheriff. It was here that he found his calling, and was proud and honored to join the community of peace officers and policing. He retired after 30 years of service with great stories that lived on, despite the early years of dementia. Garrie had a great sense of humour and appreciated a good prank or practical joke whether he was creator or the recipient.

Thank you to Dr. Omelan, the caregivers at the Maples Care Centre, and all of Garrie’s family and friends for their love and support. The challenges of dementia are multi-faceted. If you wish, donations in memory of Garrie would be appreciated to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.

A celebration of Garrie’s life will be held at a later date.

Those we hold in our arms for a little while, we hold in our hearts forever.
