It’s impossible to capture everything about Garney in a few paragraphs.

Garney’s early years started at the City of Winnipeg where he met Carol and won the hearts of her and the family.

Aug 3/1956 they wed and over 63 years of marriage they moved at least 30 times. After 35 years in the Canadian Armed Forces afterwards he hung up his cleats.

From Chibougamau to Victoria to Winnipeg with many stops in-between. A short stay in Ismailia Egypt for him, not his favorite.

He was always involved with all kinds of sports from his early years. Baseball, Judo, Golf, Fishing, Ping Pong, Tennis, Horseshoes, Darts, anything to do with a game he was all in.

Early memories? Seeing him being towed behind a car by a rope on ski’s in the winter on a gravel road in Alberta with thumbs up for faster and thumbs down for slower. (usually thumbs up) Blanket in front to keep him warm. Have to dodge the telephone poles!!

He was a great baseball pitcher. He was drafted by the Montreal Maroons (Texas Rangers affiliate) and likely would’ve made the major leagues except for when he broke his leg sliding into 2nd base.

Elected into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame with the St Boniface Native Sons 1955-1959 – 2000.

1967 Pan American Games Dad fought in the heavyweight division for Judo even though his fighting weight was a middleweight. Came 2nd to someone 50 lbs heavier .

He ended up with a 3rd degree black belt when he was finished with Judo.

He was a great golfer. 2 holes of one that we know about. The best story was when he shot his age at 69. Due to different start conditions, he had to play the 1st at Transcona as his last. Usually an easy par. He told us it was the toughest par he ever had to make.

He also shot 75 when he was 75.

Dad loved the little things in life. Watching the chickadees by their fountain on Winona Ave. He would sit there for hours with the music going.

Mom was always # 1 in his eyes. Mom was devoted to Dad. That made it so special.

Dad was always there to support and listen to his sons with compassion and care. His encouragement was unwavering and he will live in our hearts forever.

A wonderful and kind soul, loving husband and father, he will be missed.

We’d like to thank all of the staff at Deer Lodge Centre that took great care of Dad over the last 18 months. Especially Lindsay Bacala for her caring, support and guidance.
