Obituary for Eva Kehler (Wiebe)
Eva (Wiebe) Kehler
26 September 1936 – 26 August 2023
On Saturday morning, August 26, Eva Kehler passed from this world, after several years of struggle with Alzheimer’s. Her family, Peter (son), Angela, Tyler (grandson), John (son) and Mary-Beth, deeply grieve her passing. Her nieces and nephews, John, Tina, Elizabeth, Daniel, James, Barbara, Catherine, and Sarah feel the loss of Aunt Eva. Eva survived the loss of her husband David, brothers William, David, and Jacob and sister Sara.
The funeral of Eva Kehler will be held at New Bothwell Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, Wednesday, August 30, at 1 pm.
Eva was born to Lizzie and Gerhard Wiebe at their home north of Lowe Farm on the 26 of September 1936. Her early childhood was spent in Plum Coulee until the family moved to the Sommerfeld Colony in Paraguay in the late 1940s. She formed an integral part of the family’s farming life. When Eva was a young woman, the family returned to Manitoba. Eva worked as a seamstress in Winkler, a skill she carried forward into the rest of her adult life.
One day David Kehler, a friend of William’s, came to the family farm and saw Eva. That day began their long and happy love story. They married on July 27, 1969, and remained by each other’s side until David’s death 47 years later.
Eva loved children, especially her two sons Peter and John. She taught them practical skills like cooking, cleaning, and sewing, but also life attitudes like the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect.
Over her life, Eva put her practical intelligence to good use. She loved children, and so ran a childcare service from her home in Winnipeg. She loved gardens and grew many beautiful flowers and tomatoes. She baked and made jams and preserves for her family’s enjoyment. She enhanced her household with crochet and fabric painting. She loved her Tupperware parties and working our puzzles and word searches.
Her last years were spent at Greendale Estates and Menno Home in Grunthal. There she happily chatted in low German and enjoyed friendships with other residents Trudy and Elizabeth. She stood out at the regular Bible study meeting with her knowledgeable responses. Her smile, sense of humour and love of hymns brought joy to staff and residents.
Although we know she is at peace in Heaven, she leaves us with a hole in our hearts. We love you, Mom.
