Obituary for Eva Marie Dion (Eva Marie Mathieu)

Eva Marie Dion
(née Mathieu)
February 9, 1927

Peacefully on August 2, 2020 at Calvary Place, Winnipeg, aged 93.

Predeceased in 2018 by her husband of 72 years, Joseph Eugene (Gene), she leaves to mourn her children Adèle (Andy), Janet (Jerry), Rene (Lusia), and Louis (Josie), four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Eva was born to Romuald (Ronald) and Delphine Mathieu on February 9, 1927 in Fisher Branch, Manitoba, the second of three children. She was predeceased by brothers Adelard (Don) and Raymond. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Helen (Don) and Enid (Ray) as well as nephews Richard (Joan) and Douglas (Cheryl).

Eva grew up and attended school in Flanders and Fort Frances in the Rainy River District, Ontario. After completing secretarial training in high school, she was recruited by the Ontario-Minnesota Pulp and Paper Company to work as secretary to the mill’s Managing Director. On August 31, 1946 she married Gene Dion in Fort Frances, Ontario where they lived until 1950. On January 10, 1950 Eva and Gene moved to Sioux Narrows to start their own business – Gene’s Sales and Service, which they owned for 28 years. As Gene’s full partner in the business, Eva was actively involved in daily management, including payroll, billing, ordering and inventory.

Over the years she was also active in the community, serving on the Kenora District Separate School Board, the Sioux Narrows Cemetery Board, the Curling Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the annual Sioux Narrows Arts Festival and special community projects such as the compilation and production of the Sioux Narrows history book, Beyond the Bridge, published in 1985. Although Eva and Gene often travelled on winter vacations, in summer they enjoyed boating on beautiful Lake of the Woods, overnight stays at their island cabin and visiting family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Calvary Place Personal Care Home for their care and compassion during the final months of Eva’s life.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to the pandemic, a celebration of Eva’s life has been deferred and her ashes will be interred at the Pineridge Cemetery, Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Eva’s name to Calvary Place Personal Care Home, Winnipeg or the Pineridge Cemetery, Sioux Narrows would be greatly appreciated.
