Obituary for Ethyl Yvonne Armstrong

ETHYL YVONNE ARMSTRONG

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ethyl Yvonne Armstrong (nee Diehl). Ethyl left us on September 11, 2013 following a short illness.

She is survived by her son Joe Armstrong (Marie) and granddaughter Amelia from Sydney Australia, sister Dona Bergquist, nephews David and Paul Bergquist, niece Darcie Bergquist (Kyle), brother Randy Diehl (Ann), nieces Sarah and Katie Diehl, her Aunt and best friend, Edna Baldwin as well as many grand nieces, cousins, friends and her beloved cats. Ethyl was predeceased by her father Howard Diehl (1982), mother Isla (1988), brother Charles (1996) and brother-in-law Wayne Bergquist (1989).

Ethyl was born on February 7, 1942, in Winnipeg. She grew up and attended high school in Fort Rouge and Charleswood. She spent several years in Thunder Bay, Ontario before moving back to Winnipeg with her young son Joe. Upon returning to Winnipeg in 1981, Ethyl worked at Victoria General Hospital for over 20 very rewarding years until she retired in 2005. For the past few years, Ethyl enjoyed working part-time at Victoria Lifeline. She was known as one of those rare people who was always at the centre of organizing events to brighten the days of her fellow workers. She was fun loving, hard working and dedicated to helping those who were less fortunate. Throughout her life she volunteered countless hours to organizations including Job’s Daughters and Big Brothers and Sisters. She gave generously to Winnipeg Homeless shelters and the SPCA. Ethyl was also a member and Past Noble Grand of the Sapphire Rebekah Lodge #309 in Thunder Bay. Ethyl loved her family, her friends, her cats and all types of music. She played the piano wonderfully and she passed on her lifelong appreciation of classical music to her son Joe. Her special joy in life was skyping with her granddaughter Amelia in Sydney every Saturday. Sadly, Ethyl left us before the arrival of her second grandchild, an event she was greatly looking forward to. Ethyl’s gentle, caring soul will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

In keeping with Ethyl?s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Ethyl may be made to The Guild of Victoria Hospital, c/o Volunteer Services.
