Obituary for Elizabeth Blanche Peto (Crossin)

ELIZABETH BLANCHE PETO
(nee CROSSIN)

Peacefully on December 5, 2022, Elizabeth Peto passed away surrounded by her family. Beth is survived by her children Brian (Janice), Barbara Cape (Grant Norman), Bruce (Darlene Karalash) Nancy, and Lynda (Darrell Durling); her grandchildren, Janet and Brent Cape, Laura and Scott Durling, Carly and Brittany Peto; and her great-grandchildren, Aaron, Chiara and Ben. She is also survived by her sister, Diana Crossin and many nieces and nephews. Beth was predeceased by her husband Don and brothers Eric and Bob Crossin.

Beth was born in Winnipeg on March 20, 1931 the daughter of May (Congdon) and Bert Crossin. She grew up in the Wolseley area, attending Wolseley School, Laura Secord School and Gordon Bell High School.

In December 1952, Beth married Don Peto. In January 1954, Brian was born, quickly followed by Barbara, Bruce, Nancy and Lynda. Beth was always active in any community in which she lived. She was an organizer and an enthusiastic supporter, whether it was with her church groups, political action group such as Hog Watch, her union or her apartment coffee group.

After being a full-time mother, Beth returned to full-time employment in 1970 at the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Winnipeg. She loved her role in the annual Junior Winter Games. She transferred to the Volunteer Office at the Riverview Health Centre and retired in 1991. Once retired, Beth and Don enjoyed travelling and Elder Hostel provided many memorable experiences for them both. Cross-country skiing in the winter was a favourite activity that she loved to do with Don and her family. Summers were spent gardening and hosting gatherings at the family cottage on Mackies Island.

Mom’s health began to deteriorate just as the pandemic began and she received a diagnosis of developing dementia. The restrictions during the Covid outbreak made the last years of her life challenging. She lived for a time at The Rosewood, The Courtyards of Linden Point, and finally Riverview Health Centre. Through it all, Mom maintained a positive attitude and along with her family, appreciative of the care and support she received from the caring and compassionate staff.

A memorial service celebrating Beth’s life will be held Wednesday, December 14 at 11 am at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Cres. (Parking also available at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cres.). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Riverview Health Centre Foundation
