Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend, Darrell MacKay passed away peacefully after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s and dementia, on April 5, 2023. Darrell is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lorane, his daughter Christine (husband Dale), son Darren (wife Kandis, grand-kids Maeve and Miller), and nephews Judd (wife Jamie) and Steven (wife Shaun) Dowhy. He will be greatly missed.
Born in Crystal City, MB on March 6, 1942. Darrell is predeceased by his parents Leslie and Josephine MacKay, sister Joy and husband Wilf Dowhy.
Darrell had a lengthy career with Hydro that started in Grand Rapids, MB, and took him to Castlegar, BC, Gillam, MB, then Jenpeg, MB. In 1980 he moved to Winnipeg and continued with the fly-in program to Jenpeg until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement Darrell was a volunteer with the Manitoba Hydro Electrical Museum for many years.
A lover of cars, he restored many vehicles over the years and was an active member of the Manitoba MOPAR community. He loved his 1965 Dodge Coronet which he raced at the Gimli Speedway and showed at many car shows.
Thank you to the compassionate staff at Park Manor Care Home, where Darrell spent his last two years. A special thank you to Michelle, Rachel, Mary, Sherrie, Barb, and Lori who exemplify care and compassion as Darrell was sometimes challenging. An additional thank you to Cheryl Ulicki for her support and friendship.
Cremation has taken place, no service will be held, but a family gathering will take place in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Park Manor Care Home (www.parkmanor.ca) or local charity of your choice.
